The ‘fun’ #boardgame with the family at Christmas can be especially dire. This monstrosity has blighted my Christmas celebrations for the past few years. Here’s why… and why I’ve had some recent good news! 😄

Today’s #boardgames #blog entry is a big one. I’ve tried 18 games that have been published this year and offer some brief thoughts on all of them… Thank you 2025 - you’ve been good to my collection! 🙂

Cragside House is a @nationaltrust.org.uk property in the North East of England. At Christmas, it was especially magical. I even found some #boardgames, so it was definitely blog-worthy! 🙂

Dune and Enrique Iglesias? What on earth is happening with the #boardgames blog today?!

It will make sense. Trust me. 😉

Good things come in small packages… sometimes good #boardgames come in flipping enormous ones! I spent last weekend with all the huge box games in my collection and a good time it was too!

The weekend of Big Box #boardgames continues with the immense Galactic Cruise. I was defeated by the bot for the first time (medium difficulty). I got caught out with an unlaunched ship due to one fuel short. Great game.

Snowdonia last night and Castles of Burgundy this morning. The solo #boardgames weekend continues 😍
Nothing like a 3 point win to start the day!

House to myself so I’ve a weekend of solo #boardgames planned.

Go big or go home - it’s going to be a big-box special with the most impractically sized boxes in my collection all coming out over the next couple of days! 😍

Reykholt #boardgame got some playtime this week, as I tried my hand at growing the best veg.
I had a good time doing it too.
There was also the small matter of clinging on to power with the Roman Empire at the end of the 3rd century… all in a week’s gaming!

Some #boardgames I have sentimental feelings for, that go beyond the usual joy of wood and cardboard pieces. Most often, this is as a result of the generosity of the people in my life. Here’s why some games are that bit extra special

It’s all about the adventure and campaigns in today’s #boardgames #blog.

I prefer my adventure games/dungeon crawlers to be somewhat more manageable, with small campaigns, or one off games. Here’s what I’ve been playing:

A fine evening’s dungeon crawling with Stalagbite! #boardgame

It’s a simple dice chucker and token flipper, but captures the essence of what’s fun about exploring the unknown in these sorts of games.

Do you like trick taking in your #boardgames? It’s very popular these days, though one game that I think is excellent and utilises similar mechanisms doesn’t seem to have gotten that much buzz. Here’s why I think Tidal Blades Banner Festival is worth checking out.

Converge from @buttonshy.bsky.social is a masterful spot of 2 player #boardgame design. It plays fast and evokes plenty of agonising sounds from its players, as they navigate the deceptively simple, yet agonising, decision space. More thoughts on the blog.

Covering 200 years of history in a #boardgame is no easy task. I played a couple of games recently that attempted just that. Very different they were too. Hispania and Comanchería both give great experiences in their own way.

In today’s #boardgame blog I discuss asymmetry in games. It’s something I’ve always appreciated, but is it always a net positive?
