Big news today - the Essex Regiment Wing & huge archives at Chelmsford Museum closes on 1 Jan and moves to the Royal Anglian Museum at Duxford. Not enough info yet to know whether to be happy or not but there is bound to be disruption to access over the next year www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

My Grand Aunt Kate Sexton nee Albon lived at Frating Hall in 1939 moving to Elmstead Market before the Commune started and for a period in the early 1960's I lived in Frating Hall Cottages opposite the Parish Church.
A recent email from @sfhs1975.bsky.social offering some BMD data cds to members made me check my CD Drawer & found about 30 Essex & Suffolk FH CD's that seemed so important as recently as 5 years ago now almost never fired up as the info in there is online. How things have changed since microfiche!

Christopher Thompson has rightly posed the question to @essex.gov.uk as to what will happen to Essex Record Office should the proposed 3 way split of the County take place. It would be a tragedy to break up spendid ERO to several parts. I suspect a similar threat for other county record offices.
This lovely little poem is so true of life but also rings a bell for family historians tracing people whose name in the records changes over the years making our verification so difficult.
Who we are on the inside is not always how we are viewed on the outside.

To get to @suffolkarchives.bsky.social or @sfhs1975.bsky.social from Essex, Park and ride bus from copdock is best. They run every 20 mins. The stop you need in town is "Adj. Fore Street" in Grimwade St. a short walk down the road to Fore Street, turn left and the Hold is 100 yds on your left.
Rootsmagic is my personal FH software of choice and I have just made the £19.95 upgrade to the UK Rootsmagic11 and so far it looks a much cleaner and more intuitive program than RM10. Its a shame that while @rootsmagic.bsky.social have registered they are not yet posting on Blue Sky.

When I visit Freebmd2 I get a requirement to enter a name and password. Do you know if that is the norm or is it my computer?

The time that I felt under most pressure deciphering handwriting recently was in Sainsbury's three weeks ago when I was entrusted to the shopping by my wife & was given a quickly handwritten list full of abbreviations with a stern - do not forget anything! Who knew that pk ct meant pack of carrots?
