I don't like to skip through anything in most of the albums I listen to, but I'll drop one of the ones that nobody else has heard of that's been an all-time favorite since it came out like 15 years ago.

This one is ANNOYING AS HELL but it makes sense why they did it and also is at least just temporary (and technically can still be overcome if you're just actually good enough at the game)

If you're gonna punish a player for taking advantage of the tools they're given, or straight-up disallow optimal use altogether, then change how the tools work, or replace them for new ones. Take your fucking ego out of the dev process and let the player have their fun.

The assumed mentality here is that they don't want boss fights trivialized by a build that is already good that also just melts the boss with this weapon, too. But then why handicap yourself the rest of the way? Why even have it in the game in the first place? It's a Chekov's gun that never fires.

My go-to example of this is the Dead Cells "giantkiller", which is a weapon that auto-crits bosses but is garbage against anything else. Your backpack, normally used to store a spare weapon you don't currently need, singularly can't hold THIS ONE weapon. Why? Because fuck you or something, I dunno.

One thing that I consider to be kind of a cardinal sin of game design is when a developer implements a specific mechanic or strategy in their game but then punishes the player for being too clever with it, as if to insist that the player is never allowed to be smarter than them.

I certainly don't disagree (although I'm convinced even the public utility route would come with its own complications), it's just extra weird here because it would have been so easy to have just said nothing, instead of exhibiting the exact behavior that this site will specifically not put up with.

If I ran a social media site that was propped up entirely by users escaping my primary competitor because of One Specific Guy™️, I would simply not double-down on becoming That Guy™️ that, again, my users are trying to get away from.

Then again, maybe that's why I don't run a social media site. 🤷
