yup!! its great that it lets you choose between the flat and smooth one
I find the flat one to be better when I want the geometry to be more visible
anyways there's my thoughts :D
big thank you to @blockbench.net for making this a nice flexible tool that can serve different purposes rather than forcing everyone to go one way or another :D
i find its also a bit easier to use the flat shading to do controlled tricks, like the shadowing on the boot
you might think i've shaded the ridge here, but when i turn off shading (or use smooth shading) entirely, you'll see i didn't actually shade anything
example of using both to your advantage
the metal part of the boot is given the flat shader to really make the geometry of the boot shine, and to give a more rigid look
but i use smooth shading on the leather part on the foot to make it appear softer, and because the geometry isn't as important
but for certain cases where you want to make the geometry look smoother than it actually is, the smooth shader is totally great, especially paired with good texture work
i still think the flat shading looks neato for more blocky things like yuri's hand here
the smooth shading looks a little weird for my taste when it comes to that
some thoughts on blockbench's new shader

first of all, incredibly based for allowing you to choose between the shaders *per element*
