Finally detailed mixed media illustration looking down into a mature glade of autumn trees. In the foreground the picture is framed by leaves and fruit of the same trees.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

The Morrell Library is 59 years old today!

Join us on a brief pictorial trip back in time with his much loved* brutalist building, starting with this cracking picture of the mid-60s campus, with the Morrell behind Central Hall.

Look at those crisp architectural lines. Woof.

Next up: plans >> 🧵
Black & white image showing the lake (very still), Central Hall looking alien, Vanbrugh College and behind that a very white and clean Morrell Library

I have to repeat what I said at this time last year ... Now that the season is done a thank you to all the BBC local radio commentators who have provided a quality backdrop to my summer and also to the increasingly professional county video streams which keep us in touch and entertained

Can't come soon enough.

'The Transport & Environment thinktank has urged the government to use the autumn budget to bring in a levy on the largest vehicles, which it said would reflect the damage they caused to the environment and infrastructure.'
UK could raise nearly £2bn by taxing SUVs in line with European countries, study shows
Thinktank says an ‘SUV loophole’ means UK buyers pay up to 20 times less tax on biggest models than in neighbouring nations

Journalists at press conferences seem to love asking compound questions.

But politicians love them even more – the second a reporter asks a compound question (when they’ve got no follow up) you just address whichever bit of it you like best and ignore the rest.

When I was about 8, Pete Murray was who I wanted to be when I grew up.

As for @joanarmatrading.bsky.social being on BlueSky and only having 305 followers … Come on, people!

Pete Murray turned 100 yesterday, what an incredible milestone! Congratulations, Pete. I have so many great memories of being on his radio shows. He was always so supportive of the creative people he interviewed, and his work has introduced many many artists to the public. What a guy!

The nightly BBC highlights of the World Athletics Championships is absolutely first rate. 30 minutes of wall-to-wall action, loads of events covered, excellent commentary, no waffle, anchored excellently and without hype by Sarah Mulkerrins. Really good - well done, BBC Sport.

Telegraph headline feels inflammatory - there's no tearing, just careful removal of a flag from a grade 1 listed historic monument that belongs to the nation.

Nice article on a sad day for Welsh cricket as the last match is played at St Helen’s, Swansea. There’s a super arial photo in this article showing just how close to the sea the ground is.

‘The end of the holidays’

A little boy leads his younger sister up a steep and winding lane away from the sea. Her reluctance to leave is palpable as she turns back and points longingly at the inviting little cove below.

The restorative powers of a Bank Holiday by the sea (1958)

Father in particular seems to have … blossomed

John Bull Magazine
Artist: G Critchlow
An illustration in two frames. Above, a family of four arrive at a guest house by the sea looking very pale and tired and worn.
In the bottom frame the same family turn to say goodbye to the guest house owner. The family look bright, tanned and sparky

Grounds for divorce imo
A screenshot of a news article from the verge. It reads “With Gemini, Williams says, you can just give the details of the message and a tone. Maybe you're running late, so you say, "Tell my spouse I'm 15 minutes late and send it in a jokey tone." Instead of having to think of what to say, the bot will write it for you.”

Just to let you know that the Metro Bank One Day Cup starts tomorrow - I can’t see one thing mentioning it on the BBC sports page tonight but it is happening…
There were some fantastic games last season - let’s support them 👍💪

I'm not sure there is much interest in me offering a hot take in return for each like. But perhaps you might like a photo of a musical instrument from my collection, instead? One per like until I run out of steam. Or instruments.
Three instruments hanging on a wall. An oud, saz and Lao mouth organ.
