Out now in Oxford Bibliographies in Classics: My biblio on "Jews in the Roman empire." My goal was to invite classicists/ancient historians into the rich world of rabbinic literature, which can transform (if we let it) how we talk about the Roman empire

to ask a complex question simply:

why do public universities have comp/rhet programs for freshmen and private universities have first year writing programs?

I'm asking mostly about the history of this (is there a book about it?) but also the philosophy behind the difference in curricula

This is a late ancient (5-7th c.?) Greek account of the life of a rich woman who was raised Jewish, converted to Christianity when her parents died, lived for 20 years as a male monk named John, was discovered & made head of a woman's monastery, & was later martyred
well, what the heck. it's the tuesday before thanksgiving, and whoever is on here deserves a treat: the first new translation I've posted in a long while: the Life and Martyrdom of Susanna:

It was a really stark and sobering contrast to go from the tremendous session @jeremiahcoogan.bsky.social arranged at the Boston Athanaeum, where we reveled in the craft and care that has poured into the material text in the history of biblical studies… /1
Very here for these shots being fired. I know that academic publishing is a tough business and margins are tight, but the precipitous drop in production quality across the board in recent years (without a corresponding drop in prices!) has really been something to behold.
I recently got a volume from Brill's series, Nag Hammadi and Manichaean Studies, and the poor quality of the paper and binding would be surprising at any price: much more so at over $200. Caveat lector et emptor.

Another reason to look for smaller academic presses! Our margins are tight but we don’t stint on quality.

So honored to have been included in this conversation. I'm told there will be a copy on hand at the SBL book hall booth—go take a peek!
Early Christian Epistolarity is out now! Get your copy (or, you know, get your library to order it) at brill.com/display/titl.... It was an honor to work on this project with Judith Lieu

Head to a Pavement location instead! Boston business w/ unionized baristas. Their shops on Newbury St and Boylston are both just a couple of blocks from Hynes Convention Center.
On your way to AAR/SBL? Skip the Starbucks, the baristas are on strike

I mean, skip it anyways, but

Alumni and friends of UVa Religious Studies: you are invited to our reception at the AAR/SBL annual meeting!

Sunday, November 23, 8-11pm at First Church Boston.

The venue is not a literal ship as in years past, but the etymology of “nave” keeps us in line with UVa tradition.

for those trying to dial in the word count of your SBL paper, here’s the definitive recipe:
Think I've got it: Take the google average, subtract 10 wpm if a 9 am session, but add an extra 10 wpm if senior people are on the panel to account for anxious fast talking, and finally round down generously so as not to make enemies

At the bargaining table with @haw-uaw.bsky.social, the Harvard administration has repeatedly refused to agree to any contractual protections against discrimination or harassment. Their rationale? Harvard already has comprehensive policies and procedures for such things that work perfectly well!
"Summers has continued to teach at Harvard since, interrupted by brief stints in Washington, and currently holds Harvard’s highest faculty distinction as a University Professor. This semester, he is teaching two large undergraduate courses and one graduate class."
When former Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers was pursuing a romantic relationship with a woman he described as a mentee, he turned to a longtime associate for guidance: Jeffrey E. Epstein.
