Drugs.

Lots of drugs…

Only being slightly facetious. I expect the top teams are all staying just on the right side of the line, but that they are all making assertive use of TUEs, and developing new techniques that are legal, until they get noticed eg carbon monoxide rebreathing.

Govern Britain? They can’t even spell it

So it seems this is how great political parties come to their end- not with a bang, but a misprint.

Fair comment. I would like to see him caught one of these times, to increase the sense of jeopardy, I’d agree there was less chance of that this time even compared to last year.
gregorrussell.bsky.social
I think the minute to bridge would have been too much in the end- but you never know- the impact on Tadej’s morale if Remco closed it to 30s and the cars had to come past him out of the gap- how would he have handled it? Would love to have been able to find out
gregorrussell.bsky.social
Except, in the TT, on pretty much the same course, Remco destroyed Tadej. That wasn’t 240km deep into a road race, for sure- but Tadej had been out there alone for a long time, and was really feeling it by the last lap- whereas Remco had had Healy and Skjelmose working with him.
gregorrussell.bsky.social
…bike change- left Remco having to TT back to catch the group, that was very costly.

Had Remco been fresher, and the last two laps were basically a repeat of the ITT- I still think Tadej would have won, but it would have been very interesting!
gregorrussell.bsky.social
I think it would have depended how the race played out. If the two of them stayed together, I think Tadej wins, for the reason you give. But it possible played to Remco’s advantage the way it went in practice- Tadej was out front alone for 70km, Remco had some support. Except for the second…
gregorrussell.bsky.social
Very interesting. Yes, Remco was clearly in awesome form. Shame we didn’t get to see whether he could have caught Tadej if he’d had fresher legs when he attacked
gregorrussell.bsky.social
Same with last year- Pog had a huge wobble with 25k to go, but the chasing group fannied around and he got away with it. If WvA had been there to drag Remco up to Pog, I think Pog would have been done.

So both look like easy wins for Pog- but they were far from it, and were compelling watches 2/2
gregorrussell.bsky.social
But that’s the point- it was far from it. If Remco hadn’t had to burn an entire box load of matches to get back to the chasing group, had gone into the final lap alone and less than a minute down, and basically turned it into re-run of the time trial- then who knows? 1/2
gregorrussell.bsky.social
Pog extended to 1min again, and it looked comfortable- but then Remco, after standing waiting for a new bike for nearly a minute, TTed back into the group, then attacked, then attacked again to go solo after Pog. In the end, too much to do- but it was far from an uneventful race 2/2
gregorrussell.bsky.social
Well, it makes a difference when you actually watch it. Pog and IDT held a minute over the chasers, but that was eaten into until it was only 35s. At which point IDT blew up, leaving Pog with nearly 70k solo to the line. If the chase had been coordinated, who knows… but it wasn’t 1/2
gregorrussell.bsky.social
And on another course, Mathieu van der Poel or Mads Pedersen may have started favourite.
gregorrussell.bsky.social
Well, on that parcours, it was unlikely anyone else could win. Would have been interesting to see what happened had Remco not had the mechanical- I still think Tadej would have won, but Remco was closer than I thought, and might have been closer still.
gregorrussell.bsky.social
Yes, they only won two GTs this year. I’m sure they’ll be crying all the way to the trophy cabinet
gregorrussell.bsky.social
What a bizarre comment. If you didn’t enjoy that today, I don’t think cycling is for you.
gregorrussell.bsky.social
Wow. Congratulations to Tadej, awesome display. Also to Remco- 2 bike changes but still gets silver. The stronger riders by far, what an era we are watching. #UCIWorlds
gregorrussell.bsky.social
Both! Lots of dramatic moments over the year, but hard to think of one to beat it for sheer spectacle and significance
gregorrussell.bsky.social
Wow. And made the catch on the GOAT. I absolutely did not see that coming. Utterly compelling watch, thank you BBC for coverage of it.

Preparation interrupted by illness in lead up to the Canada races- had to choose between riding those to prep for the WC road race, or sit them out for TT practice. He chose former. On today’s performance, wouldn’t have mattered, no one was beating Remco- would probably have got podium spot though
gregorrussell.bsky.social
Yes, he’s a class act. Disappointed for him he didn’t get the podium spot.

Congratulations to Remco- plenty of chatter on Facebook that he couldn’t do it on this course- that was an absolute masterclass
