If jurisdiction means it won't happen, how did EI, OAS, or the Disability Benefit happen? Are those fundamentally different in terms of jurisdiction?

For ever Canadian feeling smug about the situation down south, we’re on the same trajectory on far too many fronts.
“The Americas — North, Central, and South — is the only region of the world that has ever managed to stop endemic transmission of measles. But that hard-won victory against the highly contagious virus is on the verge of being rolled back.”
The Americas, led by Canada, is on the brink of losing measles-elimination status

Keeping up with the UCP government's democratic transgressions can be difficult.

But not impossible.

Here’s a running list since Danielle Smith became premier. 🧵👇

I just read 'Hello Sunshine' by @keezyyoung.bsky.social and it was a goddamn work of art. I'm so blown away by it that I'm going to have to break its greatness down into sections, but before that (and most importantly): the dog lives and everyone is gay.
I really enjoyed finding @votetanille.bsky.social's Halloween-themed platform in my inbox yesterday! The spooky theme is fun, but also the core ideas are exactly what I want to see from the NDP!

Carney tells us all that we have to "make sacrifices,” but the reality is that there's so many prosperous ways in which we could and should be investing in Canada right now that his government is refusing to see.
Thank you to the AFN for showing us a clear roadmap towards growing Canada's economy.

Adding to my Middle Earth life list, the Giant Sungazer (Smaug giganteus), endemic to highland grasslands in South Africa. They live in self-dug burrows and eat invertebrates and small vertebrates. Low and slow birthrates leave them vulnerable. #herps #lizards #NaturePhotography 🌿
In my experience if you find people in Canada who don't follow politics closely and ask "If a party gets 30% of the vote, should they get 30% of the seats?" not only do they generally think the obvious answer is yes, but many of them think that's already how it works.
This is my point again that the electorate has no idea of what's actually going on. Not in some ideological way, so you can argue whether it's good or not, just in a fact way.
Recently my brother in law explained what gerrymandering was to a coworker and they didn’t believe him because if that were really happening there would be riots in the street

We are on the brink of severe unemployment as entire career paths disappear and jobs for the under/uneducated evaporate due to AI, off shore hiring, and the end of a lot of brick and mortar businesses.

People need to come to terms with the concept of universal basic income.
"The overwhelming majority of cuts were in the two departments that have now become infamous for delivering alarmingly bad levels of service. Let's have more of that elsewhere!"

While an apology would seem to provide a personal payoff to Trump, what it really does is communicate a lack of power.

Thus, we see a purely conciliatory response do nothing to move things further. Instead it communicates a kind of sycophancy, inviting further predation.
Yeah, we need digital sovereignty on this stuff; this kind of proposal should be conditional on them handing over the source code and so we can analyze and secure it and do clean installs locally. No hiding surveillance behind IP or trade secrets. Same should go for US products.
Exciting tax proposals from @emilylowan.bsky.social in my inbox this morning. Love to see it.

(Yes, I'm excited by tax proposals now.)
I love skunks.
Witnessing crazy skunk behavior, I didnt know they were so proper!

Yesterday I tabled a petition signed by over 10,000 Canadians calling on the government to withdraw Bill C-2. This Trump-style legislation threatens due process, privacy rights & Canadian sovereignty. Canadians reject xenophobia & demand the government uphold our Charter values.

What the Alberta government just did should worry all Canadians.

When they legislated striking teachers back to work, they went a step further:

They used the notwithstanding clause.

This is part of a worrying trend.

@emmettmacfarlane.com helped me break it down:

“Relying on chatbots isn’t fringe — it’s the predictable result of care made scarce, stigmatized, and costly. Recognizing that doesn’t mean uncritically embracing chatbot care, but it’s past time to name what’s happening: Privately owned chatbots are functioning as public health resources.”
‘AI psychosis’ discussions ignore a bigger problem with chatbots
Don’t frame chatbot failures as human “insanity.”

There are a lot of courageous and strong people in Alberta fighting the good fight. I'm looking forward to seeing all they can accomplish.

This is incredible, more proof of Alberta’s ability to mobilize. A lot of people have written it off as lost to American influence but watch this, watch the teachers & their allied unions, watch the recall petition(s), watch the ongoing CorruptCare investigations. AB could flip the table first.
456,365 #ForeverCanadian signatures (plus few dozen last minute arrivals). I’m told it’s the biggest petition in Canada’s history.

None of this would happen if not for thousands of volunteers and your love for Canada.🇨🇦

Thank you! This is Alberta’s and Canada’s victory.
