The world is getting better 1/4
Aren’t all actions either intentional ethical deliberation or with ethical consequences?

We oft criticize individuals & systems but don’t criticize ourselves & our prescriptions.

That’s the gist of my critique of “oughts.” There is a moral sum not a moral system.

Marx was critical but analytical, mostly describing, but also (poorly) predicting, not prescribing.

Most of his commentary shows why

#PublicEducation
#Regulations
#ProgressiveTax
#PublicGoods
#SafetyNets

IS the best measured outcomes thus-far.
Another way to say this is that Marx asks “what conditions produce what actions?”

With science-bias, I see this as very objective.

The focus is structural analysis, not prescribing what “ought” to be done.

The “oughts” turn to anti-science, emotives outside of Marxism.

Reminder: This vast consolidation of wealth and power at the top has not been due to neutral market forces.

There’s no such thing as a “free market.”

It is designed.

It either advances public purposes or it serves the monied interests.

The problem with Monopoly

Imagine 100 companies
Each $1,000,000 revenue
Each 10 workers, $50k each
Materials $400k each
Boss makes $100k

Consolidate
100 bosses to 1
$100k to $10,000,000

$10M buys power & influence & lacks competition to increase wages & improve products

Capitalism is agnostic to morality, yet humans wield it in immoral ways.

True. Consolidation hurts consumers & helps oligarchs.

Context:

TV in 1950 was 3: NBC, CBS, ABC.
Radio in 1950 was mostly 2: NBC & CBS was 65%.
(These 2 overlapped with TV)
Forty years ago, 90% of media outlets were spread across 50 companies.

Now, just 5 companies control 90% of the media market.

This consolidation hurts consumers and helps oligarchs. 🧵

No one deserves to starve.

No one deserves to starve.

No one deserves to starve.

Most SNAP recipients work. They need SNAP because corporations refuse to pay a living wage.

The rest are disabled, elderly or unpaid caregivers.

People should be fed. Period.

So many “Marxists” & “Materialists” & “Communists” demanding (moral & ideal) change, while Marx ONLY described & predicted without aim.

“Classless, stateless” is framed as materially likely, not a moral goal.

Marx didn’t prescribe change as a (moral) goal.

He analyzed Capitalism & described & predicted that its internal contradictions would produce change.
