I’m also wondering about homoplasy and hybridization, evidently common across all of our evolutionary history.

Comparative morphology rocks but I have a hard time favoring it over genetics.

It CAN be either. Theres a good argument to be made that lemurs are monomorphic because females must compete as fiercely for resources as males do for females (and resources).

But usually it’s a social shift to polygyny/polygynandry!

Birds are weird but in mammals usually dimorphism is a result of female choice and male competition for access to females. Monomorphism can come about when male and female “goals” converge. You can get there a few different ways!

Sexual dimorphism of Australopithecus afarensis is striking and yet the hominins before it (Ardipithecus) and after it (Homo) are virtually monomorphic in most skeletal dimensions. Social evolution id a hell of a drug!
