Okay, so maybe the Lupin manga is a LITTLE different from the anime.

I've got the DVD (had to buy a second copy recently after my first one just...stopped working entirely for no reason), but it's also available on Tubi (just without any of the various extra features).

Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy (2010)
This award-winning documentary is a behind-the-scenes look at the legacy of one of the most terrifying franchises, A Nightmare on Elm Street.

If the storm kicks up again that could put an early stop to it for the night, but at least for now I'm getting started on the final piece of my Nightmare on Elm Street rewatch - Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, a great documentary going over the whole franchise.
I love when the stormy weather is here but not actually doing anything, making me almost want to hop on a console or something but knowing the moment I do the storm will actually get started.

And by love, I mean -

(That's a collective we, in regards to the world at large, not like me and my family specifically, to be clear. Didn't realize till just after posting how that could be read.)
We're currently living through a fucking nightmare of a time in the real world, so sometimes it helps that we're living through an incredible and previously thought impossible one in lots of corners of entertainment releases. It's not much, but it helps soothe the soul.
The order I made a while ago finally made it's way in, and man, it's just a wild one for me to look at.

The end of a series I'm stoked we finally got. The beginnings of a series I'm amazed we're finally getting. And a manga/US comic crossover I'm still in disbelief it exists.
From what I understand, the rights are back with the Craven estate rather than New Line, so it's anyone's guess when/if something gets made again. I'd definitely be wanting to check out whatever gets made eventually though, though the original continuity of 1 through FvJ will always be my favorite.
Overall, I'd say this movie's biggest crime is mostly that it's needless. And I mean, yeah, that's a common remake problem - but this one just really didn't bring anything that I can't get but better from the original film in practically every way.
Hell, Freddy's Nightmares actually outright STATES it in one episode. So it's not like it's this big sudden change that was never there. My main misgiving with that element is that Craven himself is who walked it back from his original intentions, so that's a bit iffy.
As far as the elephant in the room regarding Freddy's, uh..."preferences" go? I'm not all that bothered by them taking that route here either, because look, Freddy has always been heavily implied to be a child molester and not just a killer.
There's also, like most remakes, way too many scenes and elements that are just lifted wholesale from the original without any changes to really make them their own thing. All of that works to rob this new take of whatever grandiose reimagining it might have been going for.
The problem however comes in with the fact that it feels like most of the shots of him are using way too much CG on his face rather than practical effects, and my god is it noticeable. Like, half the time the lip sync isn't even done well.
Then there's the problem of Freddy himself. I actually don't think Jackie Earl Haley was a terrible choice to play Freddy. Look, we're never gonna top Englund, that's just a given. And for a take that's meant to be scary again and more serious, Haley delivers fairly well IMO.
Which, to be fair? Many of the sequels also dropped the ball on that element a lot over time, so it's not a problem unique to this movie - it's just especially notable here since this is the first installment in an attempted reboot, so it should be setting the bar better.
This is showcased really quickly too by just how many scenes of Freddy we get way too early in the film. There's really never any question when anything is a dream and when it's real either, which basically defeats the whole purpose of the idea.
I think what hurts this film the most though is that it seems to care way more about it's set pieces than it's characters, which really doesn't help make us give a damn about any of them.
There's no real comedy in this movie at all, outside of Freddy's occasional quips, and even those are much more in line with how he was in the original than the sequels - I actually think they could have done a little more of that (and wish less of them had been reused lines).
Believe it or not, I don't absolutely HATE this movie. Some of what it tries to do, it at least sorta succeeds at - namely, treating the material as actual horror again.
Closing out the film side of my Freddy re-watch with a movie I think I've only watched twice before, the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. And once again...my feelings are kinda complicated.

Overall, this one's a movie that I appreciate way more than I actually enjoy, if that makes any sense, hence why I probably don't rewatch it nearly as often as the rest. Still good though, and definitely worth seeing at least once if you never have.
The biggest issue for me honestly though? I'm not a big fan of the kid's acting in this one. Something about the performance just comes off too...cartoonish, sometimes IMO, rather than anything else, and it definitely pulls me out of a lot of important scenes.
