They're destroying what it took humankind 300 years to build. But they've doomed themselves, too. The thing is, they aren't actually doing it on purpose. Listen to the Editor natter about unintended consequences at h2g2.com/dna/h2g2/bru...

This week's subject is wizards, sailors, rogues, and kings, and nature, wiser and more beautiful than all. Clockwise from upper left: a tiny crab on a Scottish beach next to a 10p piece it could probably hold in all its arms, a fast-flowing river amid greenery in Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina, a yellow-and-black swallowtail butterfly on echinacea flowers in North Carolina, a pink tigridia in bloom in northern England, a black, white, and orange caterpillar on grass in Austria, a formal garden next to a chateau in France, a sign from an English museum showing in a policeman, a reward poster for Henry Allbones, also from the museum, and an outdoor model of Leonardo da Vinci's Flying Helix that's on a stand and moves but does not fly. The model is in Clos Luce, France.

Happy International Coffee Day! A German word that describes a coffee substitute, usually made from barley malt, is Muckefuck. It essentially means "rotting wood mulch" and can also describe any weak coffee. So next time someone makes you a bad coffee feel free to say "What the Muckefuck is this?"

😆There's a country road outside Vancouver where aliens like to land.

It always seemed to me that in the Star Trek world, generic wrinkly-forehead/possibly-with-feathers-on aliens always lived in a capital city modeled on a Delaware outlet mall. A nice one, with landscaping and a koi pond.

Ever watch Star Trek and wonder how a whole alien planet decided to wear the same outfit?

Here are some thoughts on the “planet of hats” trope, why it’s criticized, why it happens, and how to explain alien similarities in your own stories.

The h2g2 Post brings you a Nightmare from the Past: you will never look at a cherry pie the same way again. More at h2g2.com/entry/A88075...
The Blueberry children love to run
Around the hillsides in the sun;
Smiling and jolly, plump and sweet,
Best-natured youngsters one could meet.
Here's Apple, loved by young and old
And sometimes worth his weight in gold.
We hail him with delighted cries
When he comes to us, baked in pies.
Herr Burgomaster Cabbage said:
'My little dog, he needs some bread.'
Frau Cabbage smiled; 'Just help yourself,
A fresh loaf’s on the pantry shelf.'
Said Endive: 'I was born in France
But travel when I get a chance.'
Said Celery: 'I travel, too,
But my real home’s in Kalamazoo.'
The drawings are the stuff of nightmares.

Sunday lagniappe... #vss365 #escutcheon
'I wish to live an idyllic existence,' he said. 'I shall move to a farm.'
His friend laughed. 'I assume you plan to raise your own food.'
'I do, indeed. Why do you laugh?'
His friend organised a going-away party. Everybody gave him gifts: garden tools, a pair of bib overalls, crocs in several colors, an egg washer, a milk pail.
His friend saw him off at the train station. He thrust a book into his hands. 'Some reading matter for the trip.'
'Well, I DID have a couple of old New Yorkers...'
'You won't need the New Yorker where you're going. Bye, be sure to write!' The train pulled away.
Settling back in his seat, he opened the book, which was called 'How to Select Cows.' He read the word 'escutcheon'.
'How noble...er, wait...'

I'm spending Saturday afternoon with Theodoric the Goth in 500. He had the Ravenna aqueducts cleaned. 'Vegetation is the peaceable overturner of buildings, the battering-ram which brings them to the ground, though the trumpets never sound for siege.' Smart guy.
