Turns out data centers (LLM machines) boil off the contaminated water it uses for cooling down its glowing red GPUs. This concentrated contaminated sludge is spread on farm fields polluting the ground water with nitrates.

I think it’s pretty clear at this point that one of the main impacts of LLMs is to disrupt thinking: to make it so that far too many people never properly learn how to do it, and then to control the output so there are thoughts that people never learn how to think.

"The growth of AI has been called the “savior” of the gas industry. In Virginia alone, the data center capital of the world, a new state report found that AI demand could add a new 1.5 gigawatt gas plant every two years for 15 consecutive years"

AI is guzzling gas
Big Tech is paying for gas plants and pipelines to directly power data centers, threatening global climate goals.

I must say, the Labour Party is extremely pro oil and gas. Zero ambiguity. They want to find and extract as much oil and gas as possible.

Anders Opedal (CEO of Equinor) said something wrong here.

He said that the IEA said no need for new oil and gas before, now they say more oil and gas needed. This is wrong.

The no new oil and gas is if demand drops in line with 1.5C, and always has been.

The idea that opposition to geoengineering is largely just lefty extremists and loopy right-wing chemtrail guys feels very much like part of the broader project to normalise it with the ultimate aim of ensuring it is actually deployed as a tacit replacement for mitigation

This year's #Arctic sea ice freeze-up is clearly the latest on record for the Baffin Bay region (located between Greenland and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago). The extent of ice cover is a record low for the date there.

Deeply absurd. This Google PDF published on a blog (arxiv, not peer reviewed) claims an LLM is "PhD level" but in most cases the MAJORITY of reference URLs were invalid or inaccessible.

A PhD sitting down and just fabricating >50% of sources = career ending

So everyone local life shortened by the choking air pollution from the fossil fuelled power plant built to run this site: we know it's for shit like this

As harrowing as this, it felt like a relief to read it. The commentariat's refusal to grapple with what climate change will do to us, if we don't phase out fossil fuels, has been driving me insane.

This should help break the collective amnesia.
