Just read this and loved it! It's a lovely homage to Chinese fantasy in which the white snake Lady Bai seeks out her lost love and finds him reborn as an artist—an artist in need of a hero to save him from his deadlines. It's a bit about art, a bit about memory and change, and a bit about human joy.

The White Snake has transformed into the form of a beefy martial arts hero with a hat on his head and a sword at his waist. He looms over Xu Xian who has been reborn into the form of the artist Ruixiang.

"What?" the white-haired hero demands, noting Ruixiang's surprise. "What's wrong?"

Ruixiang holds his hands up to placate him. "Nothing! You're the perfect image of a hero! It's just that... I thought you'd have a tail."

The hero rubs his chin thoughtfully. "A tail? What?? I don't remember heroes having tails! Is that popular now?" "Sun Wukong has a tail!" The hero folds his hands behind his back in displeasure. "Don't compare me to that monkey!" he snaps. "What's so heroic about tails anyway?"

"I just think tails are pretty cool!" Ruixiang explains sheepishly. "It's okay! You're still a wonderful hero even without a tail!"

The hero scowls.

A white snake's tail extends from the white-haired and curls around the hilt of his sword. "How about this?" the hero asks, striking a heroic pose.

Throughout the day, Ruixiang fills up scroll after scroll of brush drawings of the hero Bai Shou in various poses. "It's getting dark," Bai Shou observes as he aesthetically looks towards the distance, into the blooming dusk, hand on the hilt of his sword, robes swaying in the breeze. "Are you done drawing?"

Ruixiang laughs. "Done drawing in a single sitting? You're so funny."

Bai Shou the hero is holding Ruixiang in a princess carry.

"Hey, why didn't you tell the guards you wanted the tea?" Ruixiang asks.

Bai Shou sets him down on his feet. "What kind of hero asks for help stealing *tea*? Would've blown our cover. Anyway, we're done flying, so you can walk—"

"Su Jie!!" Xiaoqing calls out as she spots them. She throws her arms around Bai Shou's broad chest. "I mean, Bai Shou! If that's who you like being now! Just," she says, squeezing tight, "always be *someone* to me, okay?" She looks up at him with an affection grin.
