So many of the problems with the UK asylum system - culture of disbelief, poor or nonexistent advice, endless delays, cruel accommodation policies - rolled into one awful case.

Must-read @nesrinemalik.bsky.social on the link between Mahmood's "story" and policies. I would only add that the tensions grow in contrast to the policies that allowed for her family's integration: pre-1973, *immediate* settlement for most Commonwealth immigrants www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

‘She is the daughter of immigrants,’ supporters of her cruel asylum policies say. ‘How can she be wrong?’ Let me put them straight, says Guardian columnist Nesrine Malik

Shabana Mahmood's proposal to stop being told to "go back home" is to send people "home". Her proposal to stop black and brown people from feeling like they don't belong, is to bake in to the immigration system that they will never belong.

Exactly this. The expansion of immigration policies creating permanent temporariness is known the world over to create fresh opportunities for unscrupulous employers to exploit and abuse workers ➡️
Keeping people temporary makes it harder to find work and more difficult to challenge exploitation if in work. Further limiting support for asylum seekers will increase destitution & remove options creating huge risks of exploitation. This policy making is cruel and will do much harm
The proposed changes to refugee protection in the UK are performatively cruel, and will drive labour exploitation.

Only the people of Western Sahara should decide their future. It is their inalienable right to self-determination that is inscribed in the UN Charter and international law. This sets an extremely dangerous precedent.
