If only we had defeated not only the Nazis but also nationalism...

I write about this in my article, "Postcolonial as the governmentality of immigration controls."

In 2016 the UK government introduced a scheme to encourage employers to pay employment tribunal awards by threatening them with a fine if they didn't pay.

But of the £9.6million pounds in fines issued, only £95,000 has been paid - less than 1%.

In fact this *understates* the point here.

Tory policy is not (just) to remove benefits but to remove ILR and deport, exactly like the Farage plan the PM correctly described as racist.
nisreenalwan.bsky.social
“Another part of the plan would limit benefits to people with UK citizenship, removing it even from those who have been in the country for years or even decades and have indefinite leave to remain”

If this is not xenophobia then I don’t know what is.
Sickening.

Hi GMIAU, I'm supporting someone to develop a project on age assessment & exploitation intersection at the moment. I'm sure they'd value hearing more about this Panel. Are there any resources/publications available from the speakers?

Yesterday, our brilliant Lindsay Cundall spoke at the North West Migrants’ Rights Conference, hosted by @gmiau.bsky.social and @gcnchambers.bsky.social. Events like this remind us why collaboration and solidarity are essential in the fight for justice and dignity for all migrants.

Panel 3: Trafficking📫

We're listening to 3 speakers share their outstanding work in modern slavery and immigration across the legal and academic fields.

From sharing their experiences of bringing statregic litigation, and of client’s exploitation, to sharing landmark court cases, and so much more!

This story is being picked by the Telegraph, GB News and the rest as I post, of course for the wrong reasons. It will be national news by tomorrow morning.

Solidarity to the teacher involved and shame on the school for not defending her.

Vital to intervene in conversations everywhere to calmly, respectfully introduce realities of the values of not only immigration but also emigration, and our reliance on new arrivals across the labour market. The public & political debate in recent weeks has become completely uncoupled from reality.
lukepiper.bsky.social
This sort of reality collision is going to happen over and over again so long as this government chases perceptions on immigration.
jdportes.bsky.social
Absolutely right from Streeting.

But then government/Mahmood need to make crystal clear this applies to people who have arrived since 2021 and are working in NHS/care right now -and that government is not going to change the rules and leave them at the mercy of a future Reform/Conservative govt

Only the migrants who can have children while meeting these conditions can be trusted to produce the next generation of self-actualising, autonomous UK citizens.

But seriously, during the research for my book, I spoke to a few women who planned their pregnancies around visa requirements.
dsquareddigest.bsky.social
Among other things this looks like it makes prospective immigrants choose between coming to Britain and having a family. That really does seem like an experiment on the UK economy that hasn't gone through any institutional review board.

Mahmood says she will introduce new conditions for indefinite leave to remain:

Lived here 10 years not 5
Being in work
Not taking a penny in benefits
No criminal record
Giving back to community eg volunteering

Migrants already "earn the right to settlement" through extortionate visa costs, which can run into tens of thousands of pounds. They prop up key services, including through the Immigration Health Surcharge.

Pushing the hostile environment on steroids helps no-one.

'Assertions of misuse are incorrect. In reality, the opposite is true as the system is causing great harm to those it is supposed to protect.'

Excellent summary by @sonial77.bsky.social of damage done to modern slavery protections & how forced migration, forced labour & trafficking intersect.

There seems to be some *confusion*
among Reform supporters over Nathan Gill being one of them

“But, but, Reform didn’t exist when he took his Russian bribes”

“But, but he was in UKIP”

“But, but it has nothing to do with Farage, he barely knew the guy”

So here’s a little history lesson 👍🏼🧵

The truth: we need migration.

The problem: too many politicians are terrified to say it.

Why? They're led by a) toxicity of the charlatans & b) wealthy media organisations who demand these useful distractions rather than us talking about inequality.

Reject it. Draw the line.

Good to see the new Independent Anti Slavery Commissioner Eleanor Lyons challenging damaging, unevidenced claims.

The number of claims rejected as 'bad faith' in 2023 was 13.

13. That's all.

A miniscule & entirely manageable issue, not the basis for ripping up human rights protections FOR ALL
workrights.bsky.social
Let's get some facts right. There is absolutely no evidence that migrants "abuse" the NRM. Want to know how many bad faith applications were made in the last quarter? 1, according to the government's own data.

The govt knows perfectly well that many people arriving from France have been victims of trafficking/ modern slavery en route- Libya being a particularly egregious location for this- & it’s completely dishonest to suggest otherwise, or strip protections from victims to serve its Reform-lite agenda

Also, the framing of this BBC bulletin is so bizarre- ofc people are being sent to France by plane- so the only purpose of saying they’re going back by boat can be to imply a humiliating “send-em-back-the-way-they-came” fate for these unfortunate people
petergeoghegan.bsky.social
The main story on BBC 6 Music News this morning is that a ‘boat carrying migrants is on its way to France’

Delivered in the same upbeat tone as England winning the women’s Euros.

The migration ‘debate’ in this country is unmoored from reality, and the media-political complex is feeding it
