Harry Jarin for Congress
@harrymd5.bsky.social
Husband, dad-to-be, small business owner, firefighter, not a career politician or lobbyist. I'm running to replace my 86-year-old Congressman, Steny Hoyer, in Maryland's 5th Congressional District. https://harryMD5.com
Pinned
I issued the following statement regarding Rep. Steny Hoyer's retirement:

"My campaign has never been just about one politician’s age, but rather about how Democrats have failed to advance a vision of the future in which everyday Americans can see themselves."

The Jones Act raises costs and distorts maritime markets without delivering the shipbuilding it promised. For Maryland, repealing it would mean more port activity and real opportunities for new maritime jobs. Thank you, Bad Bunny, for highlighting the impacts of this harmful, obsolete law.

This kind of smart, walkable, mixed-use urbanism is illegal to build in most American cities.

Thinking back to my conversation with @dnealz.bsky.social last month. If the election of @analiliafornj.bsky.social in NJ-11 showed us anything, voters know the difference between candidates in the pocket of PACs and big corporations versus those who actually put in the work.

Even in his first term, this would've been a major scandal. Things have deteriorated so far that this will barely register; it might not even be the worst thing he does today.

Proud to stand with Anne Arundel County Firefighters in their fight for additional staffing.

I love serving my community as a volunteer firefighter, but times have changed and our call volume is off the charts, and we do need a 4th firefighter on engines/ladders to comply with national standards.

We're never going to solve the housing crisis by building more single-family homes in the middle of nowhere. We need a coordinated, Federal transit-oriented development policy to better utilize our existing infrastructure and speed up construction of new transit lines.

I recently sat down for a video call with my friend Ryan Daniels, a former Marine who was just in Ukraine supporting the war effort. We spoke while he was in Kharkiv (with electricity, luckily).

Ryan is also a candidate here in Maryland, running for St. Mary's County Commissioner District 4.

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marking the 81st anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Please take a moment to remember the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and others murdered by the Nazi regime, including my own family killed in the Treblinka death camp.

They should obviously introduce impeachment articles for Bovino and Miller and it’s insane that no one has done it.

Naming someone is not doxxing. They aren’t undercover. They aren’t intelligence agents overseas. This is outrageous - we are supposed to be a free Republic and these people want an authoritarian police state. Lawsuits should be filed & ranking Dems in Congress should act.

I see a lot of people comparing ICE to the Gestapo. While that's not a bad comparison, Trump was not imposed on us by an occupying foreign power. He is a product of NYC, he drinks Diet Coke and eats McDonalds. He's as American as it gets, and the roots of his fascism were already in our society.
This March 1965 Herblock cartoon about police violence against civil rights activists has added relevance today.

Quick update from the firehouse, the snowstorm has kept us busy.

I know things feel dark right now. This is going to get worse before it gets better. But across the political spectrum, more people are starting to realize that this crisis won’t end until Trump + his cronies are impeached/prosecuted.

My whole life, I was told by “small government conservatives” that we couldn’t provide food, shelter, and health care to the needy because that would lead to tyranny.

And now they’re defending the government murdering its citizens, actively cheering it on in fact.

"What can Democrats actually do?"

- Vote against funding for ICE and DHS

- State that any ICE officers who commit crimes under Trump will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law

- Encourage cities and states to refuse to cooperate with ICE

- Explain ICE is part of Trump's tyranny

I recently joined Dave Neal's Rush Hour podcast to talk honestly about how the Democratic Party's institutional failures helped us get into this mess. We need new candidates who aren't invested in the same corrupt, broken system of PACs, lobbyists, and corporations that buy themselves tax breaks.

Unconstitutional. Impeachable. Congress must honor their oath and remove all these people.
🚨HOLY CRAP. An ICE whistleblower just revealed a secret memo authorizing ICE officers to break into homes without a judicial warrant, which DHS's own legal training materials say is unconstitutional!

ICE then hid the memo from the public, passing it along by word of mouth and private conversation.

We're the bad guys now. This is all mimicry of Russia. Here is Putin's own Vladimir Zhirinovsky (their Steve Bannon, a clownish nationalist) cutting a 'Ukraine cake' in 2019 alongside Olga Skabeyeva, a top propagandist (their Sean Hannity).

These people are telling you what they're going to do.

It’s been a little over a week since Steny Hoyer announced his retirement. We've been super busy, but I appreciate all the messages of support! The best way to help right now is by sending a donation, but keep an eye out for meet-and-greet events, door-knocking, and phone-banking opportunities soon.

Thinking today of MLK, someone who actually earned a Nobel Peace Prize: "When our days become dreary with low-hovering clouds and our nights become darker than a thousand midnights, we will know that we are living in the creative turmoil of a genuine civilization struggling to be born."

Great to see my friend Kathy Hochul @governor.ny.gov in NY this weekend, even if neither of our teams are winning the Super Bowl this year.

This photo was taken at the exact moment of Josh Allen's disastrous fumble just before halftime.

I would like to think the Mad King proclaiming “I will continue to illegally raise taxes on the American people until the NATO alliance collapses” would be the type of statement to cause Congress to act, but I’m not sure there’s any red line the GOP Congress has anymore.
Trump says he'll impose a 10% tariff (rising to 25% in June) on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland, because they've sent people to Greenland, until the US can buy Greenland.
