the website is a sort of broadcast/snapshot of the networks rather than the networks themselves - of course, that's why they needed me in the first place.

and by the time of that snapshot, the networks' health is exceedingly poor. Very little of its original purposes continue to function correctly

This had a great many side effects, and the health of the miracle machine - a living organism - has sharply declined. A tumorous tunnel network referred to euphemistically as a sort of library.

It was only when the miracle machine became existentially threatened by the assault directed by cxenda that this changed. the gazer gave (non-privileged) write access to consciousnesses such that the networks became truly alive and the miracle machine capable of acting in a defensive manner

The networks were originally meant to be purely archival, with no beings aside from the gazer having write access, and even he used it only for maintenance purposes. Consciousnesses had only the memories they died with, and did not "live" in the networks so much as were in a stasis there.
