sadly when the systems do come in it's usually rote and prone to cliche tied to the history of dating sims and the like, but not always. The concept of a visual novel - much like Interactive Fiction before and tangential to it - is still ripe with a potential for less genre-dictated uses.

a thought on visual novels. A game can not delve deep on ideas without tying them to game systems to some extent. In a visual novel, especially one where the player doesn't get to do much but be exposed you can find absurdly deep dives into all sorts of imaginative concepts, it's refreshing.

this stuff is kind of complex but once you got it it's a real QoL upgrade to know you can emulate whatever with a creative option for crt filter etc... old games never stop inspiring. New stuff is marred by a fallen industry in a fallen world

in retroarch turn the video output to vulkan, then go to shaders after runtime and select a good one like crt-royale and then go in the shader options to finetune. Retroarch is not user friendly but it can do a lot as a top system over a lot of emulator cores. Let me know if you need more info

at some point I decided to no longer use regular dithering because I felt it incongruous with the flat look of newschool pixel art we were pursuing at the time, but under such crt-ish conditions dither rests upon a finely textured dot pattern, so it's in a sense 'all dithering all the time'

what do you mean? I am unfamiliar with the term. If you mean the mask, it's part of the crt-royale shader passes and you get two different masks or no mask and they have subtle different effects.

obviously this doesn't screengrab well in a lossy shitty rescale for bsky though and I urge anyone to have a go with this software themselves

I am settling in with the crt-royale filter for this PC-98 escapade. It's been good to test out all sorts of shit but I think it terms of both the rational 'pixel art of the era wasn't meant to be seen without a texture effect' and the decidedly psychosomatic effect of nostalgic halation this is it

definitely so. Recommended. The autotranslator isn't that daunting. PC gaming is all about getting these emulators and hacks and filters working together so I can have an experience I would otherwise never have, it's half the fun!
