INTRODUCTION THREAD 🧵

In the style of the legendary
Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels themselves, I shall answer using the pub questionnaire they used.

》》》
Anyone that evaluates anything but moralistic standards is probably not worth taking all that seriously example 28219191.

This doesn't mean the Bolsheviks can't be critiqued but "they were authoritarian" is a moronic critique unless you can find a way to carry out revolution otherwise.
Just another day on Bluesky. Today we have a PhD researcher at the University of Amsterdam calling the Bolsheviks the 'most successful leftist organisation ever'.

Indeed, very successful at murdering millions of people.
This is obviously bait, but it should be noted that the most successful leftist organisation ever, the Bolsheviks, were characterised by 1) moral purity, 2) lack of compromise with the moderate factions, and 3) vicious infighting and call-outs in the press

I’m done with the online left. And here's why.

Update on Plato Thread:

I actually completed writing it. However I realised that I would simply be summarising a dialogue and that's essentially lazy content. So instead of that, which I have now scrapped, I have decided to combine Classics and Marxism to provide a fresh Marxist perspective.

Sorry about the delays folks but each one of these threads takes a large amount of effort, so I'll try to be more realistic with the schedule next time!

Slight Euthyphro delay due to sourcing issues.

Unironically think cottagecore is feudal romanticisation with dangerous reactionary implications. It's larpy but I have done quite a bit of thought on this during its heyday.

Anyway watch for the Euthyphro post in a few short hours!
i hate the concept of cottagecore i hate when people call me cottagecore there’s nothing cottagecore about mushroom foraging there’s nothing cutesy about the holy communion between man and mushroom it’s dead fucking serious

As part of my "Introduction to Plato" threads, the first on the inaugural dialogue of Euthyphro will be coming out later today. Watch as Socrates questions a holy man on his not quite so divine understanding of divinity, and demonstrates his elenchus method.

Gotta be honest for a second, even though left twitter was way better than the reactionary mess it is now I really don't want to go back to a constant stream of Maoist English jokes and low quality memes about liberals.

Want to read Plato but don't know where to start? Alcibiades I is traditional but I recommend Euthyphro.

I recommend John M. Cooper's "Complete Works of Plato." (Much cheaper overall than to buy individual texts)

I will also show off some rare vintages in thread.
The next thread will probably take a break from pre-socratic philosophy to talk about Plato.

Specifically I plan on doing a succinct 'intro to Plato' that goes through successively his Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Meno & Phaedo. (Phaedo will probably be a two-parter)

THE PYTHAGOREANS:

Pythagoras is one of the most recognisable names in history but most of his life is shrouded in mystery - and no he didn't invent THAT theorem.

Here we take a look at the man himself, and the religious cults of the acusmatici and mathematici which descended from him.

Writing a thread about Pythagoras is harder than it looks because 95% of it ends up being about this followers since everything relating to the man himself is unverifiable and unlikely.

Is this not common???
Someone is reading a book at my bus stop.

Not even on their phone or a kindle.

An actual paperback book. Literature, even.

This is a thing now isn’t it? I’ve missed the zeitgeist on this.

While I'm writing the Pythagoras thread, what are some future topics people would like to see?
November 21, 2024 at 3:31 PM

Tune in tomorrow for an exciting thread on Pythagoreanism!

From Pythagoras himself, to his 5th-Century successors in the acusmatici and mathematici.

(Philolaus and Empedocles will receive their own individual threads in future)
November 19, 2024 at 1:40 PM
Also I'm aware the influx of new followers is primarily due to being on the leftist starter pack, will say that I will be mixing classics with Marxism in future threads as well so if that sounds interesting please stick around! :)

THE FIRST PHILOSOPHERS:

Who were the Milesians? Thales, Anaximander & Anaximenes will forever be immortalised as the first three philosophers.

Here we examine them, their central concept of the first principle or "Arkhe" and the birth of the discipline of philosophy. 🧵

Silver Caste = People's Militias
Bronze Caste = Workers

Let's do it folks.
