There will be no #GlobalPlasticsTreaty from #INC5.2. The Chair informed us at just after 6am this morning that, despite best efforts and a new revised Chair's text overnight, consensus could not be reached.

Our Viewpoint article in Environmental Science & Technology argues that linking chemical pollution to biodiversity loss in field studies requires careful control of confounding factors—otherwise, “effects” may be spurious.

Non-profit publishers (PLoS, Oxford, Cambridge) and publishers partnering a lot with academia (Wiley) are much more committed to open science than the others - MDPI being the worst by large. (4/5)
figure showing nine data points (each for a distinct publisher) in a graph where Y-axis is our open science index and X-axis is academia friendliness (=proportion of published journals co-owned by an academic entity); strong positive relationship

Over the past few years, our PlastChem team has worked tirelessly to map the chemical complexity of #plastics. Today, we publish the findings in @nature.com. We hope this evidence propels the development of safer plastics to protect human health and environment. 1/4

Mapping the chemical complexity of plastics - Nature
An inventory of 16,325 known plastic chemicals, including >4,200 hazardous compounds, supports the development of safer plastics.

Our new paper is out!
Using RNA-Seq, we found that a filter with a large pore size (3-10 μm) is suitable for collection of medaka environmental RNA.

This is such an important call from an early-career scientist. The current delays in decisions on publications are absolutely damaging to the careers of our junior colleagues. (1) 🧪

Dear editors, your publication delays are damaging our careers
Chia-Hsuan Hsu waited 18 months before chasing an editor for a decision on a paper. The answer surprised him.

Our paper is out! "Metal exposure profiles at metal-contaminated sites in rivers across Japan."
doi.org/10.5985/emcr...
We compiled available measurement data for metals in rivers across Japan, identify metals of concern, and derive realistic exposure profiles.

There are already many articles for which there is more attention on Bluesky than on other comparable micro-blogging sites, meaning the academic community and the general public have clearly adopted Bluesky as one of its core places to disseminate and discuss new research.

‘A place of joy’: why scientists are joining the rush to Bluesky
