Hi and thanks, new followers! I can't keep up at the moment, so not following you back is just me being slightly overwhelmed. Welcome to posts about Black and gender history, the history of white supremacy, these histories' political implications, light sarcasm, elephant GIFs, and love of pastries.
RIP, Rob and Michele Reiner. And thank you.

Minnesota Paid Leave will begin next year. It means that you cannot be fired for having to take a medical or family leave and will receive 90% of your wage (capped) for up to 3 months. Employees and employers finance this through a 0.88% wage premium. Welcome to the bare minimum, L'Etoile Du Nord!

11 people in Australia were killed today by gunmen while they celebrated the first night of Chanukah at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. Targeted because they were Jews.

As Jewish families around the world, we place our menorahs in our windows. Our message to the world: Light will outlive the darkness.

The (video of the) person tackling the terrorist at Sydney's Bondi beach and thus ending the shooting is hands down one of the most badass things I've ever seen. Kudos.

Yes, I, too, base all my present-day decisions on the unique and never-seen-again political and judicial wisdom of 1839. Marvellous year. #SCOTUSHearing

The snow falls. It is always doing that (in Minnesota).

#RandomPost: I will never understand people who ridicule the use of local anesthesia at the dentist. Dentists literally drill into your jaw - why would you be contemptuous of people who would rather have the area numbed? The "avoidable pain must be endured!" folks are a little to Riefenstahl for me.

I would just like to remind some folks that this guy’s own *mother* wrote to him to call him the worst. That’s who we’re dealing with here.

While three snow removal trucks are busy across the street, I’m reading Lucy Caplan’s wonderful new book on early 20th-century Black opera, which we will discuss with her when she joins our Carleton American Studies Winter Workshop tomorrow (via Zoom - have I mentioned the snow removal trucks?). 🗃️

Today is the 70th anniversary of Rosa Parks' arrest. Six myths: 1) She wasn't old or tired. 42 years old that day, she had a "life history of being rebellious" & had spent two decades helping to turn the Montgomery NAACP into a more activist branch alongside ED Nixon and Johnnie Carr.

The thing about this OU essay is also that it shows why especially WoC profs’ syllabi and rubrics are usually very detailed. So you don’t have students challenging their grades because they didn’t cite any sources and believe that they know more about this than you, older white male colleague? OK 🙃.
