Nothing work-related, or at least that’s the plan. Mostly books, and Edinburgh.

I love this building - I visited for the first time around the time we were reading the Ada Goth series and the two are now inextricably linked

A Smith and Gertrude wine flight and a book at the bar - I liked finding out that people reading books over a glass of wine were one of the target audiences when the founders set the bar up 10 years ago! Wine was delicious though book choice - Tender is the Flesh - continues to creep me out

I would love to wear this fabric

It took a highly sophisticated Jacquard weave to create the incredibly detailed oranges that form the fabric of of this early 1890s dress. You can almost smell the citrusy peel. There so many details to observe here, the pattern matching, the cuff trim, the drama! #V&A #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

It has black lace on the sleeves and a high collar A detail of the front of the bodice of the orange patterned 1890s dress showing black lace at the neckline and the detailed fruit Sleeve detail of the 1890s orange patterned dress which has a yellow silk trellis work trim with black lace Full length view of the front of the 1890s dress patterned with oranges and trimmed with black lace

The Ig Nobel is incredible , one year an Indian guy won it for calculating the average surface area of an elephant and during his acceptance they had an elephant hold up a sign with the surface area of the scientist on it, they do showbiz better than the Oscars

Video: a Japanese scientist was attacked by flies while giving the acceptance speech for his Ig Nobel Prize-winning research paper that proved painting Zebra-like stripes on cows led to a decrease in biting fly attacks.

I can’t believe I’ve not heard of the Ig Nobel prize before but I love it

Collecting the @argonautbooks.bsky.social Halloween totes (with a spooky book) is becoming an annual tradition but think this year’s kraken design may be my favourite to date - I absolutely love it!

It was a dark and stormy night … and going to one of @argonautbooks.bsky.social spooky season events to hear Vanessa Santos talk about her short story collection ‘Make a Home of Me’ was a good way to spend it

For #nationalpoetryday one of my favourites: Mid-August at Sourdough Mountain Lookout by Gary Snyder
Mid-August at Sourdough Mountain Lookout

Down valley a smoke haze
Three days heat, after three days rain
Pitch glows on the fir cones
Across rocks and meadows
Swarms of new flies

I cannot remember things I once read
A few friends, but they are in cities
Drinking cold snow water from a tin cup
Looking down for miles
Though high still air.

I do like a vampire/gothic romance and this list looks good - I did enjoy Twilight (though never made it through the sequels) but have to admit these all look more fun www.nytimes.com/2025/09/30/b...

This was our last bedtime story of the evening in honour of Jane Goodall: ‘only if we understand, will we care, only if we care, will we help, only if we help, shall all be saved’

Because this week sees the start of October I’m reading ‘A Tempest of Tea’ by Hafsah Faizal (vampires, romance, roaring ‘20s inspired fantasy) … & building myself up to ‘Tender is the Flesh’ by Agustina Bazterrica (which looks like full on horror 😬)

Also finally got to look inside 14 India Street, the birthplace of James Clerk Maxwell as part of Open Doors in collab with the JCM Foundation. Lots of detailed but well written info about his work and impact today: quite a bit I did not understand but some I did (I will take that ratio)
Carved stone of house at 14 India Street saying James Clerk Maxwell, natural philosopher born here 13 June 1831 Entrance hall at 14 India Street with curving stairway and marble pillars Posters from the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation - a wealth of information and very well written

Marking #MathsWeekScotland at National Museum of Scotland with a talk on maths and myths (Big Grey Man of Ben Macdui … or the brocken spectre phenomenon?) and a wild maths trail around the natural history galleries
