At a basketball game in the Twin Cities and the officials better be good because there are a whole lot of whistles in the stands.

Sports Take is back from break with a theme for 2026. Also, how much does it cost to buy a college football player? Niko wants more court storming. The most unpopular (and popular) team owners in town. @startribune.com's deadline dilemma. And the transfer portal killed the teen dream. Deal with it.

Counterprogramming for the Vikings. At the St. Thomas-Denver game. Nice arena, good game, good lead-in for Bears-Lions later.

I should really know better than to drive through the Total Wine parking lot at 8:15 on New Year's Eve on the way to pick up dinner. 🚑🚑🚑🚑🍷🍸🍺🍾

THE FAILING NETWORK NBC, WHICH USED TO EMPLOY CHUCK TODD, DIMINISHES ITSELF EVERY SUNDAY NIGHT WHEN MEDIOCRE CARRIE UNDERWOOD PIRATES THE MUSIC TO JOAN JETT’S EPIC ‘I HATE MYSELF FOR LOVING YOU’ AS THE LEAD-IN TO SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL! THIS IS SACRILEGE AND MUST END OR THERE SHOULD BE CONSEQUENCES!

Day One of @startribune.com being printed in Iowa will be an adventure, via NWS Twin Cities:

As of 2:45 PM, Interstate 35 has been closed from Highway 14 (just south of Owatonna) to Clarks Grove, MN due to numerous crashes from the winter storm. I-35 is also closed from Clear Lake to Ames, IA.

Thinking there’s a once-in-a-lifetime weather story to be written on the first @startribune.com Iowa-printed edition being driven through a blizzard to Minnesota.

Hope there are a couple of reporters and photographers on the delivery trucks — and that I can read their story on the web site.

Got much better value, intensity and excitement going to a high school basketball game today than you got if you went to the Timberwolves game tonight.

Fans never know when they're going to show up and the team they're rooting for decides not to.

Feels like following the @poptartsbowl.com is more entertaining on BlueSky than watching it at home. Am I right?

I'm hoping for Max Brosmer to do well for all the hometown guy reasons. But he has the on-field presence of a guy who won a silent auction to play quarterback for an afternoon on an NFL team.

The Vikings halftime show ft. Snoop is kind of reminding me of the halftime show when the Metrodome hosted the Super Bowl . . . in 1992.

I'm pretty convinced Jamie Erdahl didn't know what she was signing up for when took on the assignment of leading this crew. But at least she's home for Christmas.

Some great stuff at the end of @howardsinker.bsky.social's Sports Take today, talking to Dunja Antunovic from the U of M who's researched women's sports coverage, which has a growing interest:

‘Twas the day after Christmas,
And all through the town,
Fans pondered the Rate Bowl,
“New Mexico?” They frowned.
The Gopher football team is headed to the Rate Bowl in Phoenix, Arizona. Minnesota will face New Mexico at 3:30 PM on December 26th.
