going to try and watch a hundred films this year, because despite paying for a cinema pass and reading reviews almost non-stop and having virtually any film at my fingertips i always end up seeing five or six new ones a year at best...

really enjoyed this. it'll be interesting to see how it pans out. agree with jim's point on it needing a more dynamic midfield. hopefully we can get to the sort of post-dominance level that's good enough to eek out the odd title which jon spoke of. don't think it will be dull either way.

now that we know england are the best team in the world, is it even fair letting us start with eleven men at next summer's world cup?

106/ the grifters

early nineties noir comedy thriller directed by stephen frears and produced by martin scorsese. anjelica huston, annette bening and john cusack as three rival swindlers on the con. don't know how i'd not heard of this. very slick and thoroughly entertaining. really good. 8/10.

has a young player ever been drafted into senior england training from the youth sides and *not* been said to have made a good impression? wonder if anyone's had a complete 'mare and never recovered.

people will have loads of motivations for this relentless a.i push, none of them in our best interests, but the part i find myself thinking about most is how the right just want a big button they can press for some art rather than bothering to listen to records or read books or go to galleries.

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

Kemi Badenoch claiming Terry Pratchett as her favourite author is wild

so far this week i've seen 'news' articles telling people to throw washing-up liquid, vinegar, and cinnamon down their drains every autumn. what a clickbait slop world we live in nowadays.

trying to think of what the most comparable thing on british tv would be, which was still going forty years past its peak...

very surprising given they so passionately believe in free speech...

105/ midnight special

jeff nichols film from 2016 about a dad and mystical lad on the run from a cult and the plods. didn't mind it at all. michael shannon doing that thing he does. think nichols is a very solid upper mid-tier director. like it when films go full-on sci-fi/weird at the end. 8/10.

usually whatever pep does the league follows (arsenal always looking like the city of two years prior an obvious example), but this is different, like he's inspired by the tactics of the teams who trouble city most. he's probably always been less stubborn and wed to one way than people suggest.
iaindowie.bsky.social
not sure arsenal do look that imperfect. just a perfectly perfunctory side with very few weak points. you wouldn't pay to watch them, but they'll grind out more points than the other two because they mix it up more (and because they have the strongest squad). expect they may win it comfortably.

amongst the vilest things i've heard someone freely say on tv (and it's a high bar, unfortunately).

every time i see this guy in stuff he plays a quite convincing hardman or villain, but in real life he looks like he probably listens to neutral milk hotel.

harsh. hoped he'd be given four or five years to turn it round.

yet it still will never be better than the week with bernard dorset, valerie the postmaster, and the woman who fell asleep before she served her food.

negatives - teams are starting to target o'reilly more. we've got to start converting more good chances. donnarumma makes my arse fall out almost any time he's got the ball at his feet. rodri going off's a blow, but at least it's a different injury. not sure i'll ever fully warm to savinho.

first half was the best we've played this season. second half wasn't pretty, but we've got to get back in the habit of winning games in different ways. reijnders is slowly starting to look the part. foden's confident and fluid. the passing was excellent until it wasn't. bobb's a very unique player.
iaindowie.bsky.social
big underdogs have won it before.

over thirteen thousand films is some going, fair play.

done the bedding, four loads of laundry, sorted the garage, filed a tax return, cleaned the bathroom and toilet, and served a fry-up - four hours. doddle. don't know what all the fuss is about.
