The Midas Curse: How Mining Interests Own Australia’s Democracy
“You can’t always get what you want,” sang The Rolling Stones. The Australian mining lobby never received the memo. For decades, it has secured its every wish: a royalty regime that ranks among the wo...

I fundamentally have a problem with banning specific technologies. It is unenforceable, has massive jurisdictional problems, and is generally performative. My preference is to ban misuse. It’s harder to prosecute, but if ease of prosecution is your only guiding light, then you’re in a bad place.

Why is it that property developers in NSW can act with impunity, and that the default response to gross fraud and misrepresentation hasn’t seen the principles facing charges? It’s a criminal industry and our lack of enforcement makes it a joke.

Any law which provides the minister “discretion”, especially when there is no appeal process, is an invitation for bad outcomes leading up to and including corruption.

Any advertisement which starts with “everyone is…”, or claims that the item was created by a brilliant inventor in the country it is being sold in, or that “you won’t believe”, or “this one change will fix your (insert disease here)” IS A FRAUD.

Advertising brokers need to be held accountable.

A couple of people asked me about why domain knowledge is needed for a MBA.

Here’s why: the entire concept of the MBA is a fraud. This is not hyperbole, this is basic logic.

Competent management requires understanding. The concept of managing something you don’t understand is inherently… 🧵

My son just returned from Italy, where this is being widely reported. The Italian government is investigating rich citizens who flew to Yugoslavia in the 90s to pay to shoot civilians in “sniper safaris”. Yes, including killing kids. The depth of evil is hard to imagine. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Trump is jealous of Zohran Mamdani because he knows how popular Zohran is.

Trump is hoping some of that popularity will rub off on him if he poses with Zohran.

It’s really interesting to me how much science and technology has come out of CSIRO, which almost always goes to overseas companies to invest in. And this is somehow CSIROs fault. Its time industry was held to account for its failure, and our unbalanced and rent seeking economy.

Imagine what would happen if Queensland police investigating a drug dealer sympathized with them and tried to offer advice and help. That police officer would be prosecuted. But… this happens all the time in DV, and police don’t even seem able to see that they’re doing this. What a gross failure.

I am so thoroughly enjoying this series.
John Menadue: PM Malcolm Fraser was an inspiration to work with on immigration and multicultural affairs. The contradictions in the man kept multiplying.

His commitment to non-discriminatory immigration was deep-seated. He buried White Australia as no other PM.
