Like the other kind, intellectual bankruptcy comes slowly - then fast.

You can argue endlessly about renewables and fossil fuels' relative near term cost-benefits, but invoking children as those who will pay the price for efforts to try and tackle a climate crisis that they will bear the brunt of? How does that even work?

Sigh…Impossibly beautiful piece 🌻 Whitacre wrote this to the words of Robert Frost but the estate asked him to wait for public domain, so he released it as Sleep, with words by Tony Silvestri.… heaven! The Frost has now arrived... Just absurdly perfect ❤️🌻

The first person present and its damnable effects on nature and travel writing.
At the end you ritually set fire to a copy of Guardian travel section prose.

Nothing says "I want independent judges" like threatening to sack any judge who disagrees with you, while holding up a judge's wig like a puppet

This is among other things a product of how far UK Conservative and Reform Party MPs and Spads have become so marinated in Right wing American social media that they have adopted its view of unis as a source of radicalisation tempting youth away from the moral purity of National Conservative thought

He’s built his life around 2 big UK parties and now faces a continental spectrum of groups getting 20-30% at best. It could all go haywire, and probably will. Which raises the question: what would it take to get Starmer et al to see the urgency of electoral reform?

Not all that comforting with an electoral system of First Past The Post, designed to work with 2 big bloc parties and now confronted by a continental spectrum of parties who struggle to get over 30%.
Almost incredible that Labour doesn’t see the danger in FPTP and go for electoral reform.

My only comfort here is that when you add up the numbers the non-science denying, reality-adjacent, vaguely progressive parties are - as they almost always are - in the majority. Still deeply worrying though.
