Protection of the Dead
Whether lawful or unlawful, death is an inherent part of war - and has been throughout history. Yet, until now, IHL rules on the protection of the dead have received relatively little attention in scholarship. The ambition behind this Review edition is to remedy this gap, focusing on contemporary wartime realities and humanitarian responses. By treating the dead, no matter who they were in life, in a dignified manner, parties to an armed conflict contribute to upholding humanity in war.

Armed conflicts are not beyond the reach of the law. Warring parties are not free to pursue victory at any cost, especially when it endangers civilians.

Even wars have limits, always.
November 13, 2025 at 8:51 AM
All parties involved in armed conflicts, whether it is a non-state armed group or a state, must protect civilians and civilian objects without excuses.

Civilians shouldn't bear the cost of the hostilities.
