I can only hope that the current backlash against AI content is something that will not fade away, but instead gain more steam as the full societal and artistic impact of it is seen.
ieleino.bsky.social
Thanks, this is a great collection! I hate hate hate the way AI is transforming the game industry especially on the art side, but I have to admit that your slides on the subject were pretty good and nuanced.

And while I'm not looking for a service design job myself right now, I hear a lot of stories how insane the field is right now. If really seasoned pros like you are finding it hard, I can imagine how disheartening it is for anyone who started studying it in post-COVID boom years for example.
ieleino.bsky.social
Exactly the same experience. We tried to recruit for a senior service designer around 2021, got some 20 applications, 10 of them had no experience and most others were good candidates for a junior position. Luckily a few were really great junior candidates and we ended up up hiring one of them.

Hey, sent you an question over email about a small indie commission. No worries if it's not your bag, just wanted to make sure it didn't end up in a spam folder as gmails quite often do.
ieleino.bsky.social
Why not do both?

I remember how good Mechwarrior 2 was when playing it as a kid, had a joystick setup (just a basic Gravis Analog Pro though). Then many many years later tried it again, then with a mouse and keyboard and while it was obviously so much more intuitive and easy to play, the feeling just wasn't there.

been looking at control configurations in old 90s game manuals like Descent and MechWarrior 2 for ~reasons~ and man, we used to be a goddamn society

Started work on the first level design with the new gravity build. Visuals aint amazing yet, but the concept is there and it works, couldn't be happier. #gamedev #unrealengine #blender #3dart #indiegame

Still, I do want to somehow utilize the movie sounds also, maybe by layering some elements of them on top of whatever sounds I build. I really want this game to sound like (slightly modern interpretation of) a 70s/80s action film.
ieleino.bsky.social
Thanks for reply! I really dislike subscription services, so I think I'll buy some kind of audio pack. I was thinking of Boom library's GUNS bundle, but Aftertouch might be an option, as I could just buy a bunch of the firing sound packs in different calibers, that wouldn't be too expensive I guess.
ieleino.bsky.social
I'd love to be able to hire a sound designer to do all this, but at the moment my budget (coming out of my own pocket) isn't much, so I'll probably have to do this my own self.

youtu.be/q6SyqkclvRs?... there's this guy who's captured a ton of sounds from different films which I'd like to use as reference, but I'd also want the whole to feel cohesive so the style of the weapon sounds isn't all over the place. And probably a lot of other problems I havent thought about.

Ofcourse if anyone is interested in helping create the weapon sounds, that'd be great but I'd also massively appreciate some advice on how to specifically get around to replicating some kinda specific sounds in a way that'd still sound good and FPS-y. Wonderland should sound like an 80s action film.
ieleino.bsky.social
So, I've a lot of guns (22 by my count!) ready for Wonderland, modelled and animated (many share anims though). A key part of a FPS experience are the weapon sounds though, and that's where I've zero experience. Any sound designers who'd be interested in helping out? #gamedev #gameaudio #sounddesign

Big businesses fold because they're game theory-ing that they won't face any meaningful blowback later on if they now give in to the right's demands. They're kinda right, because it's a good bet that the democrats won't retaliate if/when they gain power again. That needs to change.
ieleino.bsky.social
Next up is reimplementing the weapons with their actual animations and FOV, then it's on to adding some enemies to shoot at.
ieleino.bsky.social
The basic idea of the gravity sync is that normally the changing gravity doesn't affect any of the enemies/objects, but with the ability, the player can sync the gravity of the environment with their own, thus causing the enemies to fall down from great heights to their grisly doom.

New gameplay footage of Wonderland (finally)! Gravity was super glitchy in my build, so hired a coder to do the gravity implementation and he's done a fantastic job! Can't wait to start building on this. Also some footage of the players "Gravity sync" ability.

As someone who spent 2005-2015 neck deep in Styleforum (and Tyylit, Keikari, Superfuture etc), it’s been wild (and an absolute delight) to witness the origin story of a real poster. The whole #menswear community was just such a weird moment in internet history.
dieworkwear.bsky.social
"the menswear guy isn't fair and balanced." do you even hear yourself?

"fork lady is eroding public confidence."

"ladder baby is undermining the credibility of the field."

"lemon raccoon is acting without transparency or accountability."

that's what you sound like.

Tomorrow I'll post video of the new gravity system which is fking amazing if I may say so, but today is a gun day. Schwarzenegger style finnish Valmet M78 for Wonderland. Modelled in #blender, textured in substance (not 100% finished), rendered in marmoset. #gamedev #indiegame #unrealengine #3dart

What's a movie you think is perfect?

I've a ton of films I can find no fault in, but In the Mood For Love is just something that reveals something new on every watch. For the longest time Chungking Express was my favorite of WKWs work, but recently I've definitely started to prefer this.
Still from In the Mood For Love, Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai

So as the coder is working on the new prototype, what else is there to do but to model a yet another gun for Wonderland. Marlin 1895 lever action rifle. I dunno, can there be too many guns in an FPS? #gamedev #indiegame #blender #unrealengine #3dart #screenshotsaturday

Same test corridor, new gun! The swiss STGW-57. Animations are about 95% there, sounds obviously temporary. I actually recruited some paid help to redo the codebase for this project, hope to have better gameplay footage in the next few weeks. #gamedev #indiegame #blender #3dart #unrealengine
