One week to go! I am recruiting a postdoc, call ends October 7 🍃🌿☘️ In ecology, University of Helsinki is the leading university in Finland and the Nordics and the fifth-best in Europe (ShangaiRanking's 2024). And for 8 years in a row, Finland is still the happiest country in the world :-)

Can we please stop using LLM-generated images in scientific presentations? Why do we need to illustrate our slides with completely made up “organisms”? #rant

Thank you for clarifying. I think this distinction is not obvious in the paper, that’s why I and others were confused. Particularly for those like me who are not familiar with the way that JGI handles data accessibility
igorspp.bsky.social
Well, if data reuse would be conditioned to the approval of the data generator, one can withhold their consent to preserve their interests, be it from a fairness pov (protecting ECRs who generated the data) or from a more unethical pov (I don’t want people working with “my” data)
igorspp.bsky.social
Thank you for the clarification. I understand where you are coming from and agree that this JGI issue is a huge problem. But I’m still not convinced that this is a generalised problem, I will read the paper once again.
igorspp.bsky.social
Yes, access to the data by the reviewers, which doesn’t mean that the it needs to be fully public right away
igorspp.bsky.social
IMHO, what this paper proposes is a fix to the JGI problem that just adds a layer of subjectivity and creates huge potential for gatekeeping—please note that I’m not suggesting that this is your intention at all, but rather an adverse consequence that just makes the problem worse
igorspp.bsky.social
All the datasets that I have generated so far have been made public when the manuscript was accepted, so I have never been scooped in that sense. I’m happy to be proved wrong but this looks to me more like a JGI problem rather than a generalised one.
igorspp.bsky.social
Thank you for the clarification. Yes, I’ve read the paper but no, nothing is said specifically about this. I’m not from the US, and in the countries where I’ve worked (Brazil, Belgium and Finland) I have never come across such a policy, which is indeed very bad for ECRs.

“Following adoption by databases, authors and scientific journals would ideally integrate statements confirming that the best practices governed by DRI use were used in manuscripts and submission processes.”

What about this? Wouldn’t this effectively condition publication to these rules?
igorspp.bsky.social
Also, the poll data presented is massively biased towards the global north. And not one single author in this paper is from outside Europe, USA or Canada. Do you think that what is proposed here represents accurately the views of the global scientific community?
