I’m late to the #ArtAdventCalendar party, but I’m all for anything that gets more art out in the world. Here’s a quick charcoal portrait I did from a Sktchy source image as part of my continuing struggle to get a handle on the Loomis method.

The New York Times 100 notable books list for 2025 has sections for fantasy, romance, horror, and historical fiction. Sci-fi… nope, don’t need that one. I would like a word with whoever put that list together.

I can’t do half stars on Letterboxd. Rating movies is already stressful enough without getting down to that level of precision.

1. Robert Mitchum is incredible
2. A charming sci fi adventure with teenage characters I didn’t want to punch
3. Gory and fun. I wish it had gone off the rails even more
4. Long on atmosphere with great performances, but it falls apart at the end

Say what you will about The NY Times and their fawning coverage of the AI gold rush, but this photo is a masterclass in color and composition. Let us all take a moment to appreciate those times when art shows up in unexpected places and makes our lives that much better

The details of a conversation my wife overheard while getting her hair cut led us to agree that the Venn diagram showing “heavily tattooed Seattle hairstylists” and “women who checked out library books about Wicca when they were young” is something akin to a perfect circle

1. A franchise I had written off is finding its way again
2. Beautiful and heartbreaking. Go see this movie
3. A remake that made me wonder why it needs to exist. Just go watch the original
4. A brave film about the human costs of authoritarianism

Guided by Voices just released their 42nd album, “Thick, Rich, and Delicious,” and you should definitely listen to it. It’s their best in a while and it will be at least 6 months until the next one comes out.

I just saw Destroyer put on a great show at the Crocodile in Seattle. You don’t see a lot of rock singers steady drinking white wine through a show, but Dan Bejar made it look cool.

On a recent trip to the Seattle Public Library, I noticed a single sock on the sidewalk that appeared to have some writing on it. Curious, I looked closer and found these words of wisdom

The Seattle No Kings event was amazing. Thanks to everyone for coming out and to Representative Jayapal for giving us all some hope and inspiration.

Open question for anyone who has seen “One Battle After Another”: is the scene at the end a car chase? I say it is even if it doesn’t follow the standard model, my better half is not so sure. Either way, it was freakin awesome.

I’m on my way home from a vacation in Yellowstone. The entire park sits on top of a volcano that would be the end of life in north America if it blew. This is my favorite thing about seeing Big Nature: the reminder that we are tiny, insignificant things and the Earth could get rid of us any time.

I’m sitting behind two strangers on the bus. One is a guy from West Seattle who is trying to get to Ballard. The other is an older gentleman with mansplaining tendencies and an encyclopedic knowledge of Seattle bus routes and this is the moment he has been waiting for his entire life.

My new spirit guide is the Scottish guy with the green mohawk at the Nae Trump protests. I am ready to follow him anywhere.

I went to a physical bank today for the first time in a while. They were playing “She Works Hard for the Money” over the loudspeaker. Well played, US Bank of Seattle.

I had a raised ring donut this morning because that’s how I celebrate Easter. I did make a “rising” motion with my arms and the people at the donut shop seemed to appreciate it.

“Heat” is such a great movie that I can forgive Michael Mann for forcing DeNiro to rock some incredibly 90s facial hair. I can’t say my own facial hair was above reproach at that particular moment in history.

There is no situation more anxiety-inducing than when a lunch waiter drops the check and asks “got anything fun planned for the rest of your day?” I feel as though anything short of skydiving with Cthulhu will prove that my life is a dismal failure.

How do I make Bluesky show me fewer cats and more dogs? Yes, I realize that I just made many enemies.

Many years ago, in a Denny’s somewhere outside Death Valley, a dear family friend shouted “Great Jesus Bunsuck!” in response to the waitress’s giant beehive hairdo. This is how you know your beehive is on point. Also, this exclamation is a strong contender on my Dying Words List.
