I suspect they are in early production of Yakuza 9 at this point, too. Given 2, I wonder if they are going to pivot. They usually don’t plan ahead for stories and this might be validating to Yokoyama why.

3) RGG has reached the point where they are making too much. Stranger Than Heaven, Virtua Fighter, and Kiwami 3, something had to give and it very much seems that something was Kiwami 3.

Okay so at this point three things are clear:
1) They are planning for Yakuza 9 to be Ichiban vs. the Daidojj, which is assembling a suicide squad of old Yakuza of which Kiryu was meant to be a cornerstone.
2) Absolutely no one cares about or for this plot point.

I previously thought VIIR was influenced by the Evangelion Rebuilds but now I realize that Anno (and Kitase) were actually influenced by Twin Peaks.

By far the most “Huh, I never realized this was SO influenced by Twin Peaks” realization is FFVII’s soundtrack.
Some of the tracks are near identical at times.
