When looking for something else, I stumbled across this deck for an internal presentation I gave at Sun in 2003 -- one that I believe to be the first that formally tied our work in DTrace to the more abstract idea of software observability speakerdeck.com/bcantrill/so...

I don’t usually promote online services, but I’ve been thinking about something @groundnews.bsky.social makes visible: every news outlet operates within incentives and influence (inherent bias). Ownership and structure matter.

From 2023: "The main thing to understand is that Merrick Garland and the DOJ do not want to hold Trump accountable. The preservation of a corrupt institution and its secrets is their agenda, not the survival of our country or the welfare of its people."

The core mechanism of dehumanization in tech is surveillance capitalism.. treating human life as free raw material to be mined into behavioral data. Our attention, emotions, and relationships are harvested, packaged, and sold to advertisers.

Who remembers when US politics were so boring that a private email server was enough to get you hauled in front of congress? I kind of miss those days.

Recent posts about Bondi, MN voting data, FBI warrants. People ask: why is this a problem? Let's look at how similar actions became problematic in the past: a thread 1/🧵
So...... this seems real bad.

The FBI executed a sealed search warrant today on a key Atlanta area election office - and wouldn't say what that warrant was for.

"A source told FOX the FBI was there to take custody of Fulton County election ballots from 2020."

If confirmed, this would be the first observational hint of primordial black holes and also provide a potential first detection of Hawking radiation, a quantum effect predicted but never seen directly.

This underscores the importance of configuring origin cloaking when using CDNs. I know at least for Fastly they export a list of IPs api.fastly.com/public-ip-list that you can pull and load into your firewall that will help restrict communications between your CDN infrastructure IPs and your origin.

Aroma is a project that claims TCP proxies can be detected by fingerprinting RTT timing differences at the TCP layer — plausible for many proxies but less reliable against sophisticated setups like Tor/VPNs. Experimental and insightful.

Another grim but necessary piece by Jared
Trump and the wealthy will continue dismantling democracy and increase surveillance and oppression while the GOP embraces overt Nazism. They’ll wreck any remaining standard of living and any protections

I think 2026 is the year our grief turns to rage.

Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software.

Just fuck you. Fuck you all.

I can't remember the last time I was this angry.
