The number one tip for hiring an editor—shop around. Do price comparisons, look at portfolios and testimonials, and (most importantly) get sample edits. The sample is good for you and the editor—you can both evaluate whether their style is the right fit for your project.

Don't worry about getting it perfect the first time you put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). You can always revise later—but there won't be anything to revise without putting the words on the page first!

Tip Tuesday – Write it down! Got a random idea? Think your characters want to talk more in that scene? Write it all down. It's often easier to edit extra stuff out than it is to shoehorn new stuff in.
