The State certainly rules by wielding its sword but it solidifies its dominion with pen and paper, codified into laws that structure all spheres of social existence, including knowledge producing institutions.

Critics of decolonial thought say that decolonial scholarship essentializes western thought. These critics, however, never really give an honest answer why their favorite philosophers outright supported colonialism. It’s not surprising that philosophers today justify genocide.

Historically, enslaved and colonized people refusing and resisting the liberal reforms legal frameworks constitutive of international law was used as evidence that they were not ready to rule themselves. It was taken as evidence of their non-Western backwardness.

While Trump kidnaps, dehumanizes, & deports Venezuelan immigrants, Maria Corina Machado dedicates the Nobel Peace Prize to him to give license to an invasion. This just gives you a glimpse of whose interests Machado is defending, and they’re not those of the people of Venezuela.
The Nobel Peace Prize should put Zohran Mamdani’s statement on Venezuela into perspective for those who were unwilling to listen to the critiques we made. But I’m convinced that far too many won’t ever give up their imperial worldview, way of being, and indifference.
