ByteDance and Alibaba can just use their own models, but if you want to do business and fund your work as a startup, you need to win attention and credibility and partner on building solutions. So releasing models in the open helps not just accelerate research for everyone, but also build reputation

One interesting thing I learnt: the reason Z.ai and other labs release open models? China doesn't have a market for over-the-wire enterprise AI.

OpenAI's Codex ( CLI / @code extension ) now report on rate limits. I'm still not a huge fan of timed subscriptions and prefer ones (like @GitHubCopilot, @warpdotdev, and @opencode zen) that bill per consumption, but this is a step in the right direction.
