I'm reminded also of the struggle that often hits marginalized folks in media in the US:
They will let you be tragic, they will let you be funny, but they won't let you be a full multidimensional person and they won't let you have your deeper culture nods without explaining it to them as tourists.

From an editor POV, you can kinda tell when someone is just following a trend cause the story is usually not that interesting (because the writer isn’t actually interested). When a writer is compelled the story gets weird and thats what pulls readers in.
discussion about spec fic trends by critics and readers is great, i'd just caution writers, esp. newer writers, to not let it get in your head too much. just do what compels you. you're unknowingly part of a movement and building out a landscape. it's ok to leave it to others to map out over time.

Jokes aside, serious congrats to all the Hugo winners! It was a night of success. Every human in that room was proof that we don’t need AI to do what we’ve always been doing - making art and building community.
