Whiplash is actually a movie about the failure of university administration to do its primary job of managing faculty.

JK Simmons isn’t the real villain of the movie. The real villain is whomever is the Dean of the College of Music and Arts at Shaker University.
I feel like if I were the kid in the movie Whiplash, it’d take about 3 minutes in there with JK Simmons until I started secretly recording him with my phone, and it would be about 12 hours after that that I sued the university for $8 million and lived happily the rest of my life.

Wrong. The point of Whiplash is if a band teacher calls you a “fag” and throws a cowbell at your head, you bring your Glock to class.
💜but that misses the point of Whiplash that certain sacrifices aren't worth making even for great art, for instance you shouldn't have sacrificed your time to see the movie Whiplash

This book whips, and is the first piece of history I’ve read that suggest the Treaty of Versailles, far from being a proximate cause of the war for being too harsh on Germany, was in fact a proximate cause of the war because it was not harsh enough.

The GOP’s maneuvering around Trump and Epstein is astonishing. I’ve never seen such awful spin from top to bottom.

it's got to be kind of surreal, gathering in the white house SITUATION ROOM like you're in some kind of high-stakes political thriller but it's for crisis meetings on what to say about your boss paying for handjobs from underaged models in the 90s

It’s funny that one of the most competent people in Nazi Germany was an architect with 0 industrial, political, civil, or military experience.

I've been watching a bunch of foreign WW2 movies to go along with what I've been reading, and its hard to decide who gets depicted worse, the Japanese in Chinese movies, or the Nazis in Polish, Ukrainian, and Soviet movies.

Contempt can be a healthy emotion. Sometimes, it’s your conscience telling you there’s nothing worth saving.
With genuine shame, recent years in politics have given me my first taste for what it is to have moralised contempt for my opponents. Not hatred, not fear; contempt. There's some core element of the right wing coalition at the moment which seems to me best described as a revolt of the loser men...
