A thread of islands.

#Tasmania is actually a group of islands. The name refers to both the whole group and the big island in the middle. (To differentiate, you can say "mainland Tasmania" or "the big island in the middle".).

I don't know how things will go until I start writing. The best I can do is have another idea waiting, in case the first one doesn’t work. So, I worry.
So, on the first of November I will start writing a first draft of a novel, as I have every year for the last 20 odd years (some odder than others). I always stress about it. Because, I don't know if this idea will "work".
(Late Iron Age, about 1st - 3rd century CE (which corresponds to the time of Roman occupation elsewhere, I know). Courtyard houses, which are basically a round yard with a large room at one end and smaller rooms in the arms/outer walls.)
Photo "memories" on that other place. Now I want to go to visit Cornwall, Meh.

Chysauster Village, on a foggy day. Best way to visit. Cut off from the rest of the world. Just me and the houses.)
This sounds interesting.

(Although, you might want to us #LGBT so it'll pop up for people searching for that.)
Tom's on the fast track in London's civil service. But the great dome city is to be closed. Its population can be relocated. His boss disagrees. So to save their home, they're off to the moon to find a zombie king & his sleeping knights.
This wasn't in Tom's job description.

The man who crossed the room stops in front of me. "Not so tough now, are we?"
Tough? He sent three men to subdue me, and now I'm injured and bound, he feels it's safe to gloat at me. Which of us is tough?

#WIPsnips "safe"
The #WIPSnips word for October 7th is "safe"

Sorry to those who expect an earlier post, there was a scheduling issue.

Now I can't prove that this one has been altered but what do you think?

The Brussels International Exposition, 1910 where a large fire ripped thorugh last parts of the site. (There's a longer account of it here: history-in-your-hands.com/432postcards...)

Two postcards from Clovelly, in Devon, showing a trio of donkeys going up the steep high street. Same donkeys and men show in each picture, but look closely at the buildings, especially the ones on the left and the New Inn.

I do prefer this way of pitching. On Twitter it did feel like a popularity contest and I was lost in the noise.

Thank you for putting this together.
The Merry Maidens, of Cornwall.
They were turned into stone for dancing on Sunday. Their pipers are in a paddock on other side of the road.

Last gaming photo, for now.

Gaming counters of bone, pottery and glass (L to R) and dice, from the Roman fortress baths at Isca (at the National Roman Legion Museum, Caerleon)

"A fascinating feature is the sunken triangular panel above the brow with small holes at each angle; this space likely held a decorative inset of amber, glass or metal, [maybe to help] distinguish the piece as a key one.

"One of them, a sixth century piece was found during an excavation of a much earlier broch (an Iron Age round tower) in Scalloway and could be a hnefi, or king-piece, from a tafl-type game. Traces of staining may suggest that this piece was originally coloured. 2/3
"There are a number of carved stone boards, notably from the Orkneys, the designs of which reveal they were for this type of game, as well as two probable playing pieces from Shetland, among the most spectacular examples found in Scotland. 1/3
This little fellow at the Scalloway museum bears striking resemblance to one in previous photo. Its label says ""Replica of a late Iron Age steatite gaming piece found in the interior of the Scallowy broch during excavations in the 1980s."
I don't have many Iron Ages game pieces, so I hope you'll forgive the not very good photos. They're only small, about thumb-sized, and my camera's outdoor lens is not suited for inside.

At Shetland Museum, Lerwick. The museum just says "Gaming pieces, Tingwall".

There's a lot of interest in this one on various websites, including the following quote.
And today, a single red light.
"Is it actually red?" asked an operator, one of those who converted the computer's ramblings to coherent reports. "I've never seen red before."
"It might be a very red orange."
"I think orange that red is generally called red," said Eddie, the senior tech.

This is the third board mentioned in the label (it's to the right in the previous photo). It has circles inscribed along some of the lines.
