Sure but I should think something like Ghost of Yotei has an inciting incident, no? Even if it doesn’t happen from the word “go”. It could be revealed later in the story to provide a specific revelation.
I don’t always expect to immediately understand the how and why from page 1.

Fog canyon is meant to be acquired later. It’s a signal that you’re not supposed to stay there. You’re meant to come back later when you have more abilities.

I don’t know what to tell you then cause that was never an issue for me. I think it forces you to engage with the world itself, rather than a map of the world. You become intimately familiar with the geometry and design of each room which makes backtracking through it feel easier.

I mean that’s a worldbuilding thing. But beyond that, like I said it’s exploration. You explore to fill in the map. It forces you to engage with the world itself rather than engaging with a map of said world. Otherwise you’re just staring at a map and following your little icon.

I’ll give you the compass (I tend to mod an always on compass on PC), but filling in the map is a feature of literally every metroidvania ever made. If the whole map is filled in for you, there’s no point in exploration. At that point you’re just looking for Ubisoft style objective markers.

In general, I agree with you but Hollow Knight is probably the exception where I’m ok with it. If it’s any consolation, Silksong’s story is much more straight-forward and easier to grasp without extra lore (partially because Hornet can actually talk and respond to npcs)

Other gacha’s have already solved the terminology bloat problem.
For example, here’s my Cerydra’s skill trace in Star Rail. You can see some of the recurring terminology is underlined. If you tap it, it brings you to a sub menu if you want to know what it specifically does.
