What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.

It'd be wonderful if we had this weather on Saturday.

It's a cool, crisp October day, just gorgeous. I'll finally be bottling up the sweet nutmeg and the dry meadowsweet metheglins (herbal meads). I had hoped to do it last Monday but was too zonked from vaccinations.

Hooray! Issue #9 of Fiddler's Green & Peculiar Parish magazine has arrived! Plus a few essay chapbooks. I do love a (fancy magical) zine!

Can’t decide what to buy on Prime Day?

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚

"The Hearing Trumpet", however, is a great story. 5 out of 5 stars.

"The Stone Door" by Leonora Carrington is exactly what I was expecting "The Hearing Trumpet" to be. It's a rambling multi-layered mostly nonlinear dreamscape filled with intensely personal (to Carrington) symbolism. It's interesting for a few pages, but ultimately I'm just not that interested.

Its raining with some heft now, just started. Now I want to turn all devices in the house off and play some early Genesis and just feel the rain-breeze, stare at the clouds.

Tell you what, Seattle Rep has got their hospitality game down. What a lovely bunch of people. And their nicely detailed show documentation is going to make it so much easier for me to adapt it to our house when we do "The Play That Goes Wrong" in January. Until next time, which I hope is soon!

I am from Missouri and do politics for my job, and am just now learning of this sit-in to protest attempted RW seat-stealing.
ariellaelm.bsky.social
I didn’t know about this, and if I didn’t know about this, then you probably didn’t either.

This should be my entire feed and it’s not and that’s a problem

This sit in has now been going on over 48 hours and I am just hearing about it now

I also rankle a bit at the (IMO) overuse of the word "hate." Certainly there are those whose destructive actions towards others stem from that emotion. More often the cause appears to be indifference, fear of otherness, and pursuit of social or financial reward that are sources of so much cruelty.

Extremely disappointing, @powells.bsky.social Portland, OR is full of skilled artists who could be hired to create much better imagery that AI crap. I mean, aren't we kind of famous for being a city full of artists? Not to mention how incredibly destructive AI is for the environment. Gross.

Powell's Books have new merchandise that uses AI. Workers raised concerns and were given the run-around.

Powells Book t-shirt that uses AI art, a wolf in this case.

That is so disappointing. They'll be hearing from me about it.
