And I was like OK that actually sounds reasonable to me. They weren't replacing the labor of an artist, they weren't generating plagiarism, I can accept this. But it's still not worth the environmental cost.

I have so far seen one and only one example that I approved of. In The Brutalist, a bunch of American and British actors had to learn to speak Hungarian for the film, and their accents and pronunciations weren't quite up to par, so they used AI to correct the audio.

Democrats need to play to win. Everyone agrees. Their failure to try has led to children being zip-tied in the dark by masked thugs.

So, Grijalva vows to vote against releasing the Epstein files. Jeffries is furious, publicly. They swear her in. She then votes to release the Epstein files. Easy?

Yes that's fair. Also maybe the Warhol museum.

Hey I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and you kinda don't need to go there honestly. Like it's okay but there are better cities. Good sandwiches though, with the fries on them.

God help me, I initially misread Portland as Poland and still didn't blink an eye in surprise

New in PN: The impossibly dumb reason for Trump's invasion of Portland

"Trump’s confusion isn’t just darkly comical (and a troubling reminder of the president’s growing senility) — it’s a stark illustration of the whiplash-inducing disconnect between his rhetoric and the reality on the ground."
The impossibly dumb reason for Trump's invasion of Portland
It'd be hilarious if he wasn't the commander in chief.

I love this thread and I sympathize with your plight, but I solved this issue by setting my PS5 vertically behind my television, for what it's worth

This was exactly what I first thought when the post first happened. Remember when Obama had to fight to even get a smartphone, and the one he got was a Blackberry that was completely rebuilt by the CIA? Remember when Harris was Vice President and refused to use Bluetooth headphones to avoid hacks?

Holding aside everything—everything—else, the President conducting very sensitive conversations with his Attorney General on an unencrypted social media platform would have been a major scandal any time before 2016. Is he DMing the CIA Director on there? The Secretary of Defense? We don’t know.

WSJ: President Trump believed his Truth Social post demanding prosecutions of James Comey and other political foes was a private message to his attorney general, and "and was surprised to learn it was public."

I'm more of a DC guy than a Marvel guy, but I know my way around and can give you recommendations if you want.

That said, I find that most runs worth their salt give you enough information and context to understand what's relevant in the story without needing tons of backstory, and that the ones that don't just aren't very good.

There is a History of the Marvel Universe miniseries with an excellent creative team, but it's a few years old and also covers a whole lot of ground and therefore might not give the detailed background on individual characters that you're looking for.

The owners were definitely cokeheads, and I didn't have a work permit and was almost certainly working there illegally, and probably breaking other labor laws regarding my hours, but I dream about that fucking sandwich to this day.

I have still never had a better reuben, and I continue to try them whenever they are available in the hopes that I find an equal.

When I was growing up in Pittsburgh, my first job at the age of 15 was bussing tables at a restaurant called Gullifty's, which was famous for its reuben sandwich, and rightly so. They have since closed, but for at least ten years since I stopped working there I returned frequently to order it.

I'm glad he's saying this, but I'm concerned that eventually someone will come and get him. Trump called for his arrest, and that one judge's house got blown up.

Pritzker: "This guy is unhinged. He's insecure. He's a wannabe dictator. And there's one thing I really want to say to Donald Trump. If you come for my people, you come through me. So come and get me."

Bookmarked and saved for later! As I said, I have one of Tanabe's Lovecrafts on my to-read pile, as well as the first volume of Berserk, so I'll start there...

I have seen it and I enjoyed it but it was over 20 years ago and I need to revisit it. I have a B&N copy of volume one of the Manga sitting on my shelf but I haven't actually read it yet...

I second the call for recommendations! I'm always interested in trying something new but I find Manga to be very daunting.
jafleece.bsky.social
I do like horror a lot, which is part of the appeal, but I know Junji Ito isn't the only game in town for horror Manga. I do have one of the Lovecraft adaptations you translated, though I confess I haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

It may be because it's all self-contained (relatively, as I do know that it was released serially, but it doesn't have a million volumes like some of the other stuff I've attempted to read). Another related possibility is that it doesn't seem to have as slow a burn as the other Manga I've tried.
jafleece.bsky.social
Oh that's interesting! As someone who likes his work and has had trouble engaging with other Manga, despite finding Manga art fascinating, I can say that I find his stuff to be more accessible than the other stuff I've tried.
jafleece.bsky.social
No I want to hear it! I value your opinion and you're much more knowledgeable about this than I am so I'm extremely curious!

And as soon as I hit send I realized ironically that I'm wearing a Bat-Manga t-shirt...
