I offer as examples those who believe that domesticated pets actually know what we’re saying when we talk to them. As far as wild animals are concerned, we like stories of Jane Goodall’s chimps or Koko the lowland gorilla who appeared to understand human sign language.

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding you, Sam. It seems to me that what makes people most comfortable (not just with animals, but that’s a whole other avenue of thought and discussion) is the FEELING that another is like me/understands me.

That IS fascinating! I did a bit of research because I was wondering whether jays are in the corvid family. Given your experience with yours, I wasn’t entirely surprised to find that they are. 🤗
