Fascinating look at how our brains influence ideology and political beliefs, insightful work by @leorzmigrod.bsky.social. Just added her new book, “The Ideological Brain”, to my reading list! #Neuroscience #Ideology #Politics #ResearchSky
Ideology May Not Be What You Think but How You’re Wired
In her new book, “The Ideological Brain,” the neuroscientist Leor Zmigrod outlines what makes some people prone to rigid thinking.

wealth is a public health issue because unless held by all, it corrodes everything -- all systems, all practices, all attitudes
Interesting view on populism and wealth.

"This new social contract is one between the better-off baby boomer and the state, which agrees to keep the poor behind high walls [...], allowing the affluent to retain their ill-gotten gains"

If this is true western democracy is dead.

An odd sensation I feel when not using ChatGPT to brainstorm an idea (or for a similar order of thinking) is the pleasure of reasoning by myself.

There's something about this intense satisfaction in being autonomic that I find quite intriguing, even if sad.

This is one of the clearest examples of how distressing and illogical this far-right global campaign is.

We reach a point where everything, even basic human rights, is put into question because "it looks weird".

This shouldn't be debatable, yet we now spend countless hours reporting this bullshit.
i don’t understand how, psychologically, a person gets to a place where they interpret sign language as some kind of attack or imposition on their life. like, what the fuck is wrong with you?

Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

Tremendous article. A nuclear blast by an atomic bomb in orbit will make us go back several decades. And international law is either insufficient, ambiguous, or plain disrespected. Nothing new in this realm, I suppose.

Improving care for migrants and marginalized populations is compromised by the nation’s lack of data and by the listing of migrants as Portuguese in health registries once they attain residency or citizenship. Obtaining information about migrants who are not documented is even more difficult.
Color blind: Why Portugal has no idea how bad racial disparities are
Other countries in Europe, most notably the U.K. and Ireland, are starting to collect racial data and employ it in efforts to combat racism. The UN has asked Portugal to do so as well.

Historians believe that people from the southern African nation of Angola accounted for one of the largest numbers of enslaved Africans shipped to the United States, including the first to arrive at Point Comfort, Va., in 1619.

That history has largely gone unnoticed in Angola and the United States
Angola, the U.S. and a Slavery Connection Few Talk About
When President Biden visits the country this week, he is expected to highlight a largely overlooked bond between Angola and the United States that was born out of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
