Some years ago at Halloween I met our neighbour Jerry Dammers out trick or treating with a gaggle of children dressed as ghouls. I resisted the temptation to say ‘This town is coming like a ghost town’ because he was probably fed up of hearing it quoted to him every 31st October.
I congratulated the butchers in Herne Hill this morning for not decorating the shop with fake cobwebs, plastic skeletons etc., but the staff looked a bit sheepish, as if that was exactly what they were planning to do all afternoon.
