In light of the ongoing climate crisis and current heatwave across Europe, I wish the European Commission would not define the climate transition as 'pragmatic and realistic' but rather as bold and imaginative

What better way to end our series on the external dimension of EU climate governance than by getting insights from policymaking?
Tune in to our latest episode to hear Jacob Werksman share his insights on how science, policy and economics interact and what we can expect from future climate policy

In doing so they have also attacked the EU's democratic process itself, using urgent procedures after creating competitiveness crises preventing public debates on the matter and trying to silence NGOs and civil society by attempting to cut their funding

The EU Commission together with a far-right EP coalition have delayed, watered down, and scrapped key legislation needed for a green and just transition, such as the Deforestation Law, the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, CO2 emissions of cars, and the green claims directive

Both surprised and not surprised to see 12 Israeli projects listed as beneficiaries of an advanced ERC grant. Not granting new grants to a country actively committing war crimes (and in doing so offering support and legitimizing it) seems like the lowest bar

Now that the last hurdles are cleared in the Member States and in the Parliament, looks like this delay in climate action will happen. Reminder that carmakers knew since 2019 about this standard and were given plently of other flexibilities to reach it
A bad day for the EU climate transition
janagheuens.bsky.social
Disappointing to see EP fast-tracking their approval of the delay of the emission reduction standards for cars. Granting even more flexibilities to one of the EU's most polluting sectors deserves a full democratic debate - especially because someone else will have to compensate the lack of effort

MEPs might say this is the 'final warning' and now the car sector really has to step it up (like we have not heard that before) but make no mistake that this is part of wider strategy to weaken or get rid of the 2035 ICE phase out date
