This new legislation is terrifying—not just because of the environmental destruction these laws will accelerate, but because of the ways our sovereign rights get watered down to “economic reconciliation,” a mere assimilation into a failing economy built on our dispossession and genocide.
Canada’s new fast-track laws are sidelining Indigenous consent and gutting environmental protections—then calling it “reconciliation.”

@janellelapointe.bsky.social breaks down why Indigenous communities—and everyone else in Canada—must reject this false promise.

So much violence and horror to uphold the invisible lines across our lands. How can that make anyone feel safer?

There is no "immigration problem"

There is no migrant problem

There is no problem with illegals

There is no border crisis

Only a problem of the border and the machinery of death that upholds it.

A nurse. A 37-year-old man who devoted his time to healing the sick and the injured, who came outside in the cold to protect his neighbors, gunned down in the street by bloodthirsty blackshirts
‪Update: Federal agents murdered ICU nurse Alex Pretti. ‬That’s the name of the legal observer federal agents executed in Minneapolis today. He was a union member.

Since so many people are fangirling over Carney's supposed "historic" speech in Davos, I want to offer an alternative reading.

This is not left cynicism, but a sober reading of imperial positioning in this moment.

1) Carney squarely positioned Canada as a middle power.

sorry, I get grumpy when people divert from their “decolonization journey” and wake up “proud Canadians” when nobody’s material conditions have changed 🙇🏽‍♀️

I'm honoured to have the support of six amazing climate leaders from across the country and around the world.

Climate impacts are stealing lives, costing billions, and only getting more intense.

Our politics needs an injection of urgency: a climate emergency plan. A Green New Deal.

ICYMI - My latest for The Breach. When I first started critiquing the framework of economic reconciliation, I spoke with many Indigenous leaders who agreed with me, but were too scared to speak out due to backlash.
Mark Carney and the premiers are offering ownership stakes to Indigenous communities to make mining and oil projects more attractive.

@janellelapointe.bsky.social explains that it’s just modern-day beads and trinkets to buy off resistance to destructive resource projects.

David Eby's version of reconciliation is essentially saying "We can do this the easy way, or the hard way"
Watching David Eby’s sit down on GlobalBC and gobsmacked by how clearly he is speaking about reconciliation only being possible through partnerships on resource projects and not through the assertion of our inherent rights. The tactic and threat of economic reconciliation is at the forefront.
