I suppose it's about time I make an introductory thread.

Hi, I'm Jason. I came over from the other site when Blue Sky was still invite only, roughly a couple months before that ended, IIRC.

I'm here to mostly have light hearted friendly fun with others.

Babies are born with very low levels of vitamin K, a nutrient the body needs for blood to clot, leaving them at risk for severe bleeding early in life. In the early 1960s, hospitals in the United States began giving newborns a protective injection of vitamin K.

More parents refusing vitamin K shots for newborns, study finds
Babies aren't born with enough vitamin K, which the body needs for blood to clot. An injection at birth helps prevent severe bleeding in infants.

@bsky.app popup notifications are annoying, especially in a web browser, even more so when it's about a feature I've been using for over a year now. Even worse is it steals focus!! (Bad UI programmer BAD!)

Your people should know better than to do all that. Give us the ability to turn notifs off.

So... It looks like the eMMC drive on my GMKtek G9 is dead and/or I need to reset the bios... Or sacrifice an NVME drive to host the OS. I hate tech some days. But at least the sacrificial drive has been backed up, and is redundant anyways! (I decided to while typing)

... and in my attempt to prep the main drive for reinstall, I accidentally nuked my VENTOY USB drive. Now I gotta refind all the ISOs I had on it. Bleh.

As a Gray-Ace, I know I'm heteronormative for WHO I'm physically attracted to. The details of how it works and frequency are dramatically different. Even still, I can't enter a queer space and just assume my experiences are shared. They likely aren't. Even among Gray-Ace's experiences vary.
Just a friendly reminder that just because you’re queer doesn’t mean you’re not straight and vice versa bc the A stands for umbrella of asexuality which includes straights

It’s an umbrella term for anything non heteronormative. The sooner yall realize that the sooner we can have real conversations

One big effect of AI hype and promotion of unreliable chatbots is that a significant amount of additional friction and labour is being injected into our knowledge-making and -maintaining systems. At a time when these systems are already contracting and being starved by growing austerity.
Folks might not know a lot of people are getting *very* upset that the materials they request are not available in the libraries/archives they're requesting from.

We're getting lots here at the Library of Virginia: requests of documents likely surfaced by large language models that *do not exist*.
I wish a notice like this wasn't necessary.

When this happens, systems revert to the explanation that imposes the least structural cost. Immunity debt filled that role for a long time.

Its eventual collapse wasn’t triggered by any one study.

Why the “immunity debt” narrative ultimately collapsed:

Over the past few months, the conversation has moved toward the conclusion the evidence has been pointing to for years.

Since 2022, immunity debt offered an easy explanation for the unusual patterns of illness we kept seeing.

A Michigan man has died of rabies after contracting it through a transplanted kidney.

The Donor Risk Assessment Interview questionnaire reported that the donor has been scratched by a skunk.

He then developed symptoms of rabies & died in hospital.

It seems odd he was permitted to donate organs:
Man contracts rabies from donated organ infected with fatal disease
The CDC revealed the case in a new report published Thursday, stating the man received a left kidney from a donor from Idaho in December 2024.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:

... And the EMMC drive was nuked... WTH. I'll need to look at replacing it with a more reliable brand. FML. In the mean time it looks like I can restore it to an operational state. IIRC the last time this happened I was tinkering with jellyfin. I know I was tonight...

FWIW, if you repost someone engaged in misogyny, you and them get blocked. I don't need followers like that. And I don't care if your participation in misogyny is also an attack against the admin and/or their hypocrisy.

- Generative AI supercharged data centre growth: lobbyist and substacker lines pretending like this is just streaming are false

- Even when you consider much of the projected growth is speculative, the *likely* projects are still MASSIVE

the reason its bad to run universities like businesses is that almost all businesses fail on any reasonable timeline of evaluation.

hudson's bay made it the longest and even they only got to about half an oxford of longevity
They claim financial exigency, but then turn down $4 million pledges to keep the PhD programs open and disregard financial analyses that point to the real problem—bad real estate deals, spending on consultants, and their own salaries 2/2

Ok wait I have a subversively optimistic frame on this though

Think about how easy it is to smuggle human-centered measurement into this when no one's looking and you have this expansive tool budget 😎 technical people have cultural and organizational power to shape what's seen in technical work
It's frankly astonishing the billions of dollars wasted in on new software and tools in service of various initiatives, without first ensuring the organization can accept and handle change.

Especially because making change is literally what goes into working on software.
Learning culture moderates how software organizations adopt tools and the implicit rules we're giving developers want what they can do, experiment with, push back on, and share.

And software has spent years dismissing it in favor of sloppy ad hoc velocity benchmarks
