I have a working theory of what I call the "trick franchise", an IP that gets pushed hard under the impression that because it has wide recognisability that that's the same as having a big fanbase.
He-Man has no shooters. What are the ships? People under 35 know him as the "heyayaya" man. Tricked.

It's probably a pointless endeavour to try and pinpoint the genesis point of "indie gaming" on account of how "indie games" have always been a part of game history and the delineation between "indie" and "regular" games has always been in flux..

Another reminder to developers to localise your games to Chinese, already!
We launched Simplified Chinese localisation for Loco Motive 3 weeks ago. Here's how it went:
🇨🇳 40% of all Steam units sold in the last 3 weeks are from China
🇨🇳 China leapt from just 0.7% to 6% of lifetime Steam sales.
🇨🇳 Our best selling region in the last 3 months, overtaking US English.

Seen a lot of shocked reactions to this, but it's worth noting that this is likely (I'm guessing, as a dev) just referencing the dev budget; meaning employee salary cost during development.
QA, localisation, porting, voice acting and marketing will have come out of a separate service budget.

Games shouldn't cost $100. Games should in fact cost £2, come on a cassette tape, only run on a 20kg computer that you could only buy in Britain in the 1980s, and be made over the course of six months by two 19 year-olds known only as "The Whizzy Brothers".
