Memories I did retain from her though, include her telling me and my brother about sourgrass (Oxalis pes-caprae) and how you can pick them and chew on the stems which taste very nice. And how she used to pick stork's bills (Erodium cicutarium) and push them together to create a pair of scissors

It also makes me want to write down more of my own memories before they fade even further. I have no children to pass such memories onto, after all.

Memories are so fragile. It saddens me sometimes. I wish I remembered better what she had told me, those fond memories of youth she had passed on.

A few months ago I showed her a buckeye I'd seen on the ground and she asked what it was. I was so surprised. She'd forgotten all about buckeyes and the story she'd told me. She was the one who first told me what they even were.

So that was neat to learn. My mother once told me a story about her childhood involving buckeyes. I don't quite recall now, I was a teen when she told it to me. Something she and her brothers used to do with them. Probably throw them at something, I imagine.

I noticed several trees on my walk that had completely shed their leaves, while everything else is still green (since as I said, the weather has only just now begun to start cooling). Looked it up and learned they are buckeye trees and they shed their leaves midsummer, very early.

It was the first cool day a few days ago (and today) since the start of summer. Summer's cruel grip has finally lessened enough that I can breathe again. And go outside. I've missed the outdoors so much.

Found a beetle shell on my walk today.
a smooth black empty beetle shell in my hand. the underside of the shell, perfectly clean and empty. there's an orange oval-shaped bump on the side, not sure what it is.

I had looked forward to this album for so long. and something inside me died when he did that. it tainted it entirely for me. I never listened to the album. I still haven't heard it to this day.
my brother was an asshole. and I resolved to never, ever make someone feel that way.

I don't shit on ANYONE'S musical tastes. how ridiculous to make someone feel bad about something they enjoy.
I had a favorite band that came out with a new album one yr, near xmas. I waited to get it since it was on my list. my brother got it for me. as I opened it he told me why he hated the band.

adult content is turned off on my account btw
anyway I thought reddit was less horrible now but I guess not
jaybugjabbers.bsky.social
I didn't sleep today, too tired to do much, so I was bored and decided to look on reddit for fun insect communities to join

Reddit gives me:
-fairly normal community
-community about hating a specific species of bug
-community about photos of killing bugs
-snuff video community
-I close the app

I'm just saying, we could settle this with swords, instead of 30+ emails. 🤺

It's super weird. I grew up loving invertebrates, always have, yet I do have mild arachnophobia. I find spiders fascinating and cool like I do other inverts, but there is that fear response in my hindbrain that other critters simply do not trigger. Why??
jaybugjabbers.bsky.social
I have trypophobia but it's definitely not a fear of little rows of holes, just a feeling of disgust when seeing them. I've often felt that "phobia" isn't the right word for it.

#Paleoctober2025 day 7 paleoart sketch of the extinct conifer Sequoites.

#Paleoctober #Paleoart #Sequoites #Enantiornithes
The genus existed until the Miocene, but I chose the Late Cretaceous Sequoites dakotensis so I could include an enantiornithine bird. The juvenile avialan is begging for food from an unseen parent perched atop the conifer branch with a cone and speculative leaves below it. The scene is overcast with fine rain.

Dang, that is impressive!

A few days ago I posted a dead yellow jacket which had become a community meal for Paratemnoides social pseudoscorpions, but I hadn't really considered that they are apparently capable of teaming up and catching a live one?? Checked on them later and the unfortunate wasp was deceased. Damn. 🧪
